It looks like Tony Abbott and his merry band of weirdos are going to win.

I think I'm going to throw up.

Well, it was either that or a hung parliament; Labor never stood a chance. Good riddance, I say.

But the real question is what'll happen in the Senate. That's where the real action is. Personally, I hope the libertarian-leaning minor parties win enough seats to stir things up; if the Coalition gets a majority in the Senate or the Greens retain the balance of power, then I'll throw up. Undecided

Why is everyone so scared of hung parliaments? While the politicians bicker, life goes on. If you don't trust your elected representatives, then surely a minority government that can't do too much damage is better than giving one side undue power?
Because Labor and the Coalition have both stated outright that they're not willing to form a minority government. That being the case, a hang parliament would mean another election (unless of course both major parties get completely wiped out and the minor parties form government, but that was never going to happen).

I just returned from a vacation in Australia for the past two weeks. From an outsider perspective it appeared that Abbott did well in getting across the message that he would give a $2k tax break to everyone with the removal of the carbon tax while there was much focus on the Labor guy getting ousted by his own party (or something like that).

Also the message that since Labor has taken over there have been a lot of problems was a big one.

Labor went after Abbott saying he would gut schools going for the "don't you want your children to have a good education?" approach.

I think the approach of letting people know how much money they will get from voting for one guy or the other is a good one. I saw this approach done with the LP of Massachussetts once and they did better than usual (maybe 4% instead of 1%). People like to think that just by casting a vote they will get a few thousand bucks.

Talk of a possible double dissolution election happening in the near future if the carbon tax repeal is knocked back. Will be interesting to see how things play out from here.
