If we exceed the initial target of 3000 devices that would put the final price also closer to 0.4-0.5BTC (as assembly and all other components will likely also get closer to 0.2-0.25BTC).
Will this design be opensource? I'm asking this because I think components + assembly can be lower than 0.2-0.25, especially if you consider + shipping costs for us European based. If not, please don't forget the kit option you've mentioned in opening post.
On the several questions:
Open Source: Yes. We need to iron out a few legalities but the goal is to release the entire project as open source. We'll probably do a similar thing as BKKCoin.
EU Assembly: We've been in talks with Marto74 and we're seriously considering to manufacture some boards there and ship EU orders from there. It isn't impossible that we end up making all boards there (as we're still negotiating with two assembly houses here in the US).
DYI Kit option: the only reason why we didn't put it up from day one is that it is really such a hassle to cut out tapes and count and package tiny components
But if there is enough interest we'll probably hire some unfortunate local soul and will offer that option. A rough pricing estimate for the DYI Kit option is 0.1BTC (+ BitFury chip's price) and I might be off +/- a bit depending on how much we end up paying for shipping.
