The last parameter overwrites the speed bits. A note of caution - the "safe" speed is around 50 bits, so anything over that will likely use more power than what the USB2.0 specs permit. No two chips are the same, so the upper limit will probably be different for each device. On my devices it was around 52-54.
Two things have been happening with my devices when I go over the limit - 1) when they overheat hashrate drops significantly - like 0.3-0.5GH, and 2) if the hub can't provide enough power (and voltage drops below 3.6-3.8V) that just ruins the USB communication and the device appears to have disconnect - beware that the bitfury chip will still have enough power (it needs 1V) and will continue to work even though the PC doesn't "see" the device, so you'll need to unplug it and plug it back in.

Please be careful when handling them - THEY WILL BE HOT!!! and especially even more if you push them. DO NOT TOUCH THE HEATSINKS when they work - heatsinks may reach over 80C!

At 50 bits they should be using around 500mA. At 53 it's around 650-700mA but each device is a bit different. USB3 will provide sufficient power for such overclocking.

I did not use any fan - just passive cooling (e.g. the heatsink). A fan will certainly help

Nope. Windows should recognize it as a standard HID device (and use its built-in drivers).

jsonlint ( http://jsonlint.com/ ) is everyones friend.  Always check your config file (cut and paste to the form) after making manual changes to avoid "oops"es.

I am looking for the efficiency sweet spot to run the NF1 at, not just the max.

Very steady at stock bits.  Much better quality control than the Blue Furys which all over the place.  Although the average for them is about 2.2 Gh/s.
Still trying to figure out the code to increase the bits.

That shouldn't be part of your JSON config file.  That is the command line executable.  You need to add only the part that Luke-Jr stated to your config file:

"set-device":["NFY:osc6_bits=52"],

Edit: If you want to use jsonlint, you need to copy your entire config file into the edit box to see if your config file is right.
