bitcoind getblockcount remains the same no matter what? I tried restarting several times. bitcoind currently has the default 8 connections.

What am I missing here?

Edit
The entire blockchain torrent is bigger than the default available space on VMware.

have you tried using https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=145386.0 to speed up the download?

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
