Hello, so im a mining newbie, and i know its not really the best time to get into mining right now with how crazy hardware prices are, but I am a fan of pc building and decided to get into it anyway. When ordering the parts for my first rig, I decided to go with 5 GTX 1050 2GB cards, scraping the bottom for viable mining cards I know... but they get a decent hashrate for the price. I bought these because every decent graphics card is in the stratosphere as far as pricing goes and I dont want to pay these ridiculous prices. However I just decided to get a 6th card to fill up my 6 gpu mobo, and I stumbled upon the 980ti, and while these cards are still overpriced atm, they are much cheaper than pascal cards and it looks to perform well. I watched a youtube vid and a guy was getting 420 sol/s on zcash with a 980ti... thats the same as a 1070 would hash and not too much lower than my 1080 in my gaming rig (purchased well before the gpu shortage) And heres the thing... I just picked up a used 980ti on ebay for 370 dollars. Compare that to the 1070 which gets almost exactly the same hashrate and is about double the price... Im now heavily considering picking up 5 more 980tis to replace the 1050s in my rig. I guess the main point of this post is the 980ti is an amazing value right now.... and I know what youre gonna say... it is less power efficient than pascal. Good thing I have very cheap power so thats hardly a factor haha.

I dont condone this fuckery, $370 for a 980ti?Huh?

I got all my 1070's for right around $300! And the 980ti is a major power hog compared to most cards, you are lucky with VERY cheap power but still.....

One other thing, you DO know these are crippled as of DAG 155 for Ethereum right? they hash less than a 1050ti now. I dont like the idea of buying what is realistically a pig of a card thats already crippled in some aspects.

If you are going to buy old power hungry cards you may as well buy $50 Radeon 7850's to mine Cryptonight with. $370 is just WAYYYYY too much for a 980ti. We are talking a 6 month ROI here, and who knows what will happen in the next 6 months, but certainly the next gen of Nvidia cards will drop.

where the fuck can you find a gtx 1070 for 300 dollars... thats way under msrp. I cant find a 1070 online for less than like 600 bucks.
also i dont mine ethereum... i mine zcash at the moment. it doesnt have any issues mining that

Essentially, you are buying while all GPU prices are inflated, why? 980ti just are not worth $370

I bought most of my stuff right at the beginning of the mining rush in May/June. Even so ive received multiple GTX 1060 for free since then (walmart BF 1060 desktops, eBay deals).

I just dont think its wise to spend nearly $400 on old hardware that is crippled and power hungry, it will be hard and expensive to fill a rig with them due to the power requirements (each card needs 6+8 pin, a PSU that can handle all that will be in the hundreds of dollars range).

In my parts I would have to pay about the same for a 980 TI as I would for a 1070 so I would of course go for the 1070. But even if the 980 TI is cheaper you need to consider the fact that you need more PSU power, 2 power connectors instead of 1 and so on. Those costs also add up. Still good advice to get one if you can find them cheap enough.

I would not buy a 980ti at all considering the new Nvidia chips will be released this year and possibly in the next few months. 1070's were $379 MSRP when they were released. I figure the 1170's will be $399. In my mind its stupid ot be buying 980ti's for this cost when certainly much better chips can be had soon that may hash 2-3x or more than what a 980ti can do.

Too many people let greed get in the way of common sense when it comes to mining.

I get the feeling this was a shill post, if someone really thought the cards were great they wouldn't go right to mining and say "hey guys these are so amazing!" you would buy them and set them up and they would be unavailable like all the rest.

In short, the ebay listing is probably also the op..

lol no its not a shill post. The other guy was correct in saying that I might not have made the right choice and better cards will be available soon. its really all a matter of this, im impatient, i wanted to get a good card, the 980ti although yes it is overpriced still, is a hell of a lot cheaper than any 1070 i can find and performs almost the same so i went for it. I probably wont actually fill my rig with 980tis, most likely gonna stick with just the one for now. and I know nvidia next gen cards are coming soon. but at this rate, good luck finding them at msrp, the motherfuckers gonna be sold out as soon as they launch. I dont see an end in sight for this gpu shortage... you just cant make enough money printing machines... I hope when the next gen nvidias come, pascal cards can be found cheap like this and i can get some cheap 1080/1080tis to throw in there. Or if by some miracle the next gen nvidias are readily available at msrp, ill grab some of those. I definitely want at least one for my gaming rig haha (currently running a 1080 in my gaming rig which i mine with whenever im not gaming lol)

True. Not being able to mine ethash also leaves them vulnerable if the equihash market should collapse for some reason. Plus the added power consumption and needing 2 power connectors instead of 1 making them have a hidden cost as well.

If you are looking for a cheaper card with high hash rate and dont care about consumption I would look into the AMD R9 Fury (original fury not the X). Out of the box it does 450 sols just like a 1070 and you can find them for under $300 if you snoop around enough.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

980ti burn too much power to be profitable even at 0.05 cent and heat too much .. A good budget choice could be a 1050ti.

They are definitely quite profitable at my power rate lol... plus i will be limiting the power limit of course, and likely will stick with just the one 980ti for now as I dont want to upgrade my power supply yet and am waiting on next gen nvidia launch before I get my next cards. 1050ti is a pretty trash buy for mining at the moment... why do you think i put GTX 1050 2gbs in my rig instead of 1050tis? because 1050tis cost like 250-300 dollars now and 1050 2gbs go for 100-150. And 1050 ti gets a whopping 30 sol/s increase over the 1050

Thanks for the suggestion haha. I think I'll stick with nvidia tho, always preferred their products. And holy hell just looked it up, that R9 Fury pulls 400 watts fuuck. not worried about the consumption just would rather not have to spend a grand on power supplies to hook those bitches up lol. I dont think Ill be picking up any more older cards, and will likely wait til the next gen launch of nvidia cards before deciding what new cards to get.
