What's ERC 20 tokens?

I am a bit confused about ERC 20 tokens.All I know about them that they are Ethereum based coins.I would like to know more about it.I would be glad if someone could explain me about this.Also the other day I saw ERC 22 token.Whats the difference between ERC 20 and ERC 22 token?

The ERC 20 standard is mostly a set of functions that developers should use in their tokens to make them compatible with ERC 20. ERC20 are token standards running on Ethereum blockchain and have basic functions that they perform within the Ethereum network and they are quite different from Ether and can also serve as a form of digital asset.

On the hand, ERC223 have functions help to improve on the problems that ERC20 tokens usually pose.
