Originally we used Twitterfeed to post to twitter, which posted all the updates including bumps via rss. All was well for about a year and a half, then one day it magically stopped working. I panicked, got ahold of support (which is bit.ly parent company) and they said there was no problems and I was crazy. I begged and pleaded and they thought I was doing something wrong.
So the twitter posting stopped, but I immediately purchased a special module to the twitter postings could be done on the site itself, instantly. It didn't have all the functionality I desired (hashtags!) so I got some help from a friend to modify it a bit, but it still does not tweet 'bumps' only new topics.
Fast forward 6 months of using the in-house twitter-poster, and magically once again the twitterfeed starts working without me having changed anything. So now when someone posts, the forum posts a tweet instantly and then a few minutes (<30 mins) later the twitterfeed posts it again. So I'm not sure the best method, using the in-house or twitterfeed (now that it's working again) and I have come to the conclusion that having new topics tweeted twice, 30 mins apart, is not only acceptable but it's actually pretty awesome! More tweets the merrier! So tweets are plentiful, life is good.

I don't think you need to login to lurk? You mean just browse the site? A majority of our users don't log in, not sure what you mean but the site works just fine when you are not logged in (AFAIK) but let me know if there is indeed a problem to fix.
