The Old Fitzroy will become the first pub in Australia that will allow customers to buy their beers in Bitcoin.

The pub in Woolloomooloo, Sydney, will start accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment on September 29, with Bitcoin Sydney on hand to help new-timers to the crypto-currency.

The pub, which has been around since at least 1907, will use QR codes to handle transactions. With Bitcoin wallets able to be accessed via smartphones, customers simply scan the QR code and authorise the transaction in order to pay.

Beers should cost customers around 0.05 Bitcoins, around the equivalent of AU$7 at the current value of the currency.

"I am interested in Bitcoin because it is progressive," Fitzroy proprietor Garry Pasfield said in a statement.

Thanks for the heads (no pun intended) up. BTW, how do Aussies pronounce Woolloomooloo when they're drunk?

Woolloomooloo Police: We have reason to believe you've been drinking. Pronouce Woolloomooloo.

Suspect: You got me, dude! Here's my Bong Bong driver's license.

Yeh they have some spaced out town names in Down Under, like:
Wagga Wagga, Bong Bong, Grong Grong, Walla Walla, Goonoo Goonoo, and Dismal Swamp in South Australia
How about staying in the "Pussy Cat Flat" Caravan Park

Really awesome names, lol. That's true how could you ever pronounce that. A lot of people couldn't pronounce that whilst sober.

This is awesome. I think the UK was accepting Bitcoin at select bars but it seems to be spreading.

LOL, jimmijames73, I've been to a fair few of those places and can pronounce most of them okay. But deep down inside of me there's an Aussie lurking waiting to be unfurled, prevented only by statism and brutal immigration controls. One of my philosophies is "give me an Aussie girl or give me death". Smiley

Meanwhile, it's great to know that Bitcoin is starting to spread its wings in dear beautiful Sydney. Not a big surprise of course; Aussies were never going to miss out on Bitcoin, especially with the strong mining industry in the country. Wink
