Airdrops, Bounties and Freebies. Are they worthwhile?

Long time lurker and just joined up officially as I'm a founder for a startup.

I'm just wanting to get everyones opinion on whether things like Airdrops and Bounties are actually worthwhile; does anyone have any personal experiences they can share on the sort of conversion rates they've experienced ... what's been the "bang for buck" on offering these sort of incentives, does it actually drive investment revenue up or is it merely hype?

I'd appreciate any thoughts on the matter.
