I was wondering, during the time of the hard fork last year in August I was holding bitcoins on a Bitcoin QT core wallet. At that time I wasn't aware that I could claim free BCH or BTG. Now that I've read up about it I'm wondering if I could still claim my BCH and BTG?
I do not have that core wallet any more, I have transferred all my bitcoins to a hardware wallet since November last year. But I still have the back-up .dat file. Could I still be able to do this? If so, Do I need to download the Bitcoin Core QT wallet again and let it load the entire blockchain on it again or is there a more easy way to do this?
Thanks in advance for any help provided.

You can be still redeem it there's no expiration if when you planning to redeem your bitcoin cash or bitcoin gold.. Just always make sure that if you are planning right now to redeem your bitcoin gold and bitcoin cash make sure to transfer your bitcoin to a new wallet before you redeem your bitcoin cash or bitcoin gold.. then just backup your private key from your bitcoin core wallet using this command in debug console dumpprivkey 1yourbitcoinaddress After that restore this privatekey in official wallets or import it in coinomi wallet and after that you check your wallet or refresh your bitcoin gold or bitcoin cash should be in your wallet.. bitcoingold core wallet check it here https://bitcoingold.org/downloads/For bitcoin cash check their official announcement thread here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2040221.0You can see the list of bitcoin cash wallet but mostly other use electron wallet to redeem their bitcoin cash. .

So if I understand correctly I need to download the Bitcoin core wallet again and let it load the entire blockchain again.
And as I already transferred my bitcoins to a hardware wallet I do not need to transfer them any more, just leave them there and restore my bitcoin core wallet without moving my bitcoins to it? Sorry if this is a stupid questions, just want to make sure I don't do anything wrong.

You don't need to download the block chain. You just need to dump the private keys and you can do that without downloading the block chain.

You need to download Bitcoin Core wallet software so you can load the wallet.dat and dump your private keys... but you do NOT need to let the Bitcoin Core wallet sync up and download the full blockchain. Just install Bitcoin Core and run it once so that it creates the necessary data directories... then shut it down. Move your old wallet.dat into the data directory for Bitcoin Core and then restart Bitcoin Core. You should then be able to go to: "Help -> Debug Window -> Console" and you can use the "dumpwallet" command: dumpwallet path\to\outputfile.txt
If you're on windows, you need to specify the EXACT path, including drive letter... like this: dumpwallet C:\dumpfile.txt

So I have my private keys now but I'm stuck when I try to use coinimi or electron.
With electron when I give in my keys I can't push the next button. And with coinimi I don't know where exactly to input the keys. I tried BTC.com as well but it's not clear either.

I have never used electron, but with coinomi, create Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold wallets and use the sweep wallet function. This provides some detail: https://coinomi.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/29000016813-collecting-your-forked-coins-from-coinomi

It's pretty simple. You are probably choosing the wrong option. When creating the wallet, choose: Import Bitcoin addresses or private keys -> Paste the private key -> Next.

You can redeem all sorts of forks if you've held Bitcoin at the time of the split. For some of the more unpopular forks you might need to download the entire blockchain though. I'd love to make a guide myself but there's already a very good one out there made by LoyceV, check it out here, it lists all the forks + ways/wallets that you can use to claim them, and how much $ you will get from them. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2836875.msg29086309#msg29086309

I just claimed my 0.05 bitcoin cash. As long as the fork is still active you should be able to claim Your ciins.

Did you even bother reading the thread? How did you come to this conclusion anyway? I'm quite curious. There's no expiration on funds/(coins) that have been credited to you, that would be extremely weird and something only old-school & fraudulent banks would try to do.

HaHa! another know-nothing newbie to put on ignore. I found this tool useful to check for the availability of forked coins https://someone235.github.io/btc-forks-balance/which reminds me - I need to claim mine.
