My laptop has a tendency to overheat if I try to use it for mining. I know USB block erupters are available for mining BTC and other SHA-256-based currencies which would allow someone to mine those currencies without burning up the laptop. I'm wondering if there is a similar option (i.e. something that could be plugged in via USB) for mining Scrypt-based currencies like LTC.

I found what appears to be a USB graphics card on Amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-External-Video-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B005G306I2 ); is it possible to mine with something like this? If so, what mining software applications support it?

Thanks!

Cheap options? No. None available. Get a real computer if you want to mine.

Thanks for letting me know. I do have a desktop as well, but it is too old (2004) so the graphics card in that one won't mine either. The CPU in the desktop mines fine though (although slowly). At some point I hope to replace it with a newer desktop--most likely next year as we get closer to the date when Microsoft will stop supporting Windows XP. Until then, though, I'm basically limited to the desktop's CPU, and block erupters or other USB mining devices.

If your desktop has a pcie slot you can buy a graphics card to install and mine with.
