I'm going to be building a mining rig soon. I'm either going with 6 GPU"s or 3 Ti GPU's (all bases on budget). I'd like to stay around $3,500. I was looking at 1070's as they seem to be the all around go to gpu's but it seems to me that the price of them is so high I may be able to get 1080 TI's cheaper ( 3 of them instead of 6 1070's).

Is there any reason to go with the 1070's over the 1080TI that it's definitely worth spending the extra?

Profitability calculators will basically tell you, consider also their power consumptions.

I'd just rather buy for a fairly price GPU's, I just couldn't take a 1070 with price ranging 800$ compared to previous price at 500$.

Right now there is a shortage of GPUs so you will overpay by 2 or 3 times their MSRP. Nvidia is supposed to release a new line of gpus in April. I would wait a few months and see if GPUs come down in price.

Yeah I've noticed. This 1080 TI I found at a ok price seems to have temp issues so will pass on it. I can wait until April. However I don't see prices of GPU's dropping much unless coin prices drop and stay low for awhile

I am hoping Nvidias new card release will ease the supply issues. I imagine they will sell out quickly though.

When you underclock TDP power for a 1070 it's much more efficient than a 1080ti. You can only get the same type of pull from a 1080 underclocking it to about 65% or overclocking the power to 100%+

1070's will pull much less power for more watts. I haven't tested all algorithms, but for the 3 most profitable - 1070 def worth it. Buy your gpus one at a time so you can dca them as you go. Remember if you buy them all in one go you have to set it all up asap. I'd say buy one at a time and find the sweet spot for overclocks as you go!

What does "dca them" mean? Never heard that before.

Gotcha. I’ve read up on overclocking for mining. It seems the videos I’ve ran into suggest dropping power percentage to reduce power consumption which gives you a better cost per sols. However it seems the small decrease in power savings compared to the drop in sols isn’t worth it. Wouldn’t best results be just leave it at stock settings? At the end of the day you want to mine as fast as you can?

I tried this earlier and my efficiency went up a great amount but I question if this is worth losing coins over?

how possible and convenient is it for one to use a mining rig for more than one cryptocurrency using the ZCash and Ethereumm as a case study.

Very possible, Use a certain miner like Claymore and -di options to mine specific coins on a specific GPU. you need at least to 2xGPU, 1 mining for Zec and Eth on the other.

Convenience will depend on your Technical skills and budget of course.
