In 2009 Osaka zoo, which is publicly funded, bought six koalas from Australia which cost a combined $1.4 million per year to feed. Osaka has the highest population of homeless people in Japan, and the decision to spend tax dollars on the zoo, instead of on the homeless, angered some of the homeless and others in Osaka.

That tells you something about politicians priorities and how they decided to allocate resources.

Koalas make money, homeless is not

If Koalas make money then the gov doesn't need to provide them.

Maybe the homeless can eat the koalas ?

They are not cuddly animals they are vicious if youve ever seen them in real life.

We have an excess of feral kangaroos which they could have free of charge lol.

1.4 million for feeding 6 Koala's?
What do they give those poor animals to eat? They eat eucalyptus leaves, what plants do they give them?  Cheesy

But those koalas make more people go to the Osaka zoo, so more people coming to the zoo, more money they earn, more people they need to work there, less people without a job.
And more people coming to the zoo of Osaka is also good for the local economy, and a better local economy means, more local jobs, means even more people with a job.
And more people with a job, means less homeless people.

Good point.  While I dispute anything that any government does, I must admit that an argument against feeding koala bears as a tourist attractment to make money while there are homeless people starving would be an argument against voluntary exchange.  Of course, since the government is doing it, we can complain that that money was stolen from people.

I'm suprised there are so few homeless people in Japan  Smiley.  How can anyone possibly pay rent in Japan Huh?  I visted Tokyo for about a week, and that city ate up my whole life savings Sad...

Perhaps if the homeless were willing to be put on display in cages for the amusement of tourists it would be more of a priority to feed them.
