Don't boast that you have tons of precious coins online whether it is bitcoin, altcoins or any other forms of money which you have a business with cryptocurrency, that is the risk of showing off online that you are into crypto business even if you are a small time holder or not, they will think that you are rich cause the mindset of people knowing that you owned cryptocurrency is that you are super rich, well the criminals will not have a dilemma for transferring large amount of money because it is decentralized rather than a transfer from a bank which posesses some restriction, better to stay low profile not just on bitcoin but on any other financial businesses that are not necessay to say in public.

I never thought someone could extort my money among my friends, but such info goes from them to other people who could tell to other people who can be criminals i guess. So there is always a risk.
Imagine when all people on earth will have crypto.. Then such crime will be easy for bad people?

Even if you trust them , they can tell someone and that is how it goes.
Just pick one person you really trust that in case something happens to your coins aren't lost.
If you hold a big amount maybe make a separate wallet , in case stuff like this happens you just give them a small amount of your stash.
But stuff like this will happen more and more as crypto gets more populair , so be safe.

To an online wallet eh.. I don't think that was a very smart idea.

Anyway, it just shows how important being secretive it is when investing huge amounts of money in cryptocurrency. Don't tell anyone about your investments unless necessary, especially on social networking sites like Facebook whereas your name and even probably your city is displayed to the public.

I also think like you. The kidnapped people are the owners of the crypto property. These people often show off on the media networks or the famous rich in crypto.
It is best not to disclose information related to our work as we may be the target of the kidnappers.

I heard that such robbed people tell everyone about their portfolios via Youtube and other social channels. It seems that anonymity will help to avoid such problems.

You have to be street smart in Bitcoin too. You do not walk around in shady places with the latest mobile phone and expensive

Gold jewellery around your neck, because it will attract unnecessary attention. The same goes for your online activities. You

can easily split coins into smaller chucks and distribute them over several different services. The transactions that are public,

should not be connected to your main stash in any way. Be Cyber Smart!

All in all, no matter how fat the (crypto)wallet is, no matter how good hardware wallet you get, no matter all the security layers if the guy cannot keep his mouth shut. Just a couple of words here and there and the "right people" will "break the security" with a "5$ wrench". Sad but true. And I guess it'll happen more and more

Similar cases have become more frequent recently, but this is not the fault of bitcoin. If you will carry a bundle of cash, you will most likely be attacked and taken away. So with any other values, if you have an expensive car, then someone will want to steal it, and if you have an expensive house, they will want to rob it. Everything is logical and understandable, just do not make the amount of your savings in Bitcoin public and everything will be fine. And if you have several hundred satosh, you generally have nothing to fear.
