I don't think we need to take Vitalik Buterin statement seriously and the reason is HE is DEVELOPER and NO ONE Can control or predict anything about Cryptocurrencies.
Vitalik Buterin have sold some of his share with Eth Price is 8$, he never imagined that price will even go above 500$ but this happened and now the only reason he passed this statement because many people started investing their life-saving in cryptocurrency and he want to restrict such people to invest in crypto coins where price is very fluctuating and no one can predict where price will go and how people will act on it.

Obviously the more people invest into crypto the higher his own coins will be, so I don't know why he would be saying what he has said, it seems to be against his interest. One reason that comes to mind is that he was executing someone else's command - he is known to work close with Vladimir Putin so maybe he had to say what he has said.
He already earns millions of dollars on crypto, so he just don't care about the money. He cares about the usage of blockchain technologies, and he stated many times, that he doesn't like the speculations that are made on the market now, so I can understand his appeal.
