How do i update my bitcoin client, im running windows and have got the zip, and where is the wallet.dat file??

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

C:\Users\Your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin

drag wallet.dat to another place on your pc

and download that Grin

That's what I did but I'm not sure..It worked for me

With the zip, I imagine you can just extract it into the same directory as you did the old version, but just tell it to overwrite?
I used the executable to install, so when new versions come out, I simply use the windows uninstall feature (which leaves the wallet.dat in place) and then run the new executable.

The wallet is located

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application data\Bitcoin (XP)
C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Roaming\Bitcoin (Vista and 7)

And it is just download and unzip the latest zip file at http://bitcoin.org/ and open bitcoin.exe

PS. Do a backup of wallet.dat
