I discovered that when I launch the app from a desktop icon it will not work.  So I visited the Ledger site, launched the App from there, and performed the firmware update.  Now I can get to the page to install or removed the apps for the various types of crypto coins.  The only active buttons are to install and remove those apps.
Looking at the app, the FIRMWARES button says I already have the latest version.  The APPLICATIONS repaints the screen very quickly, and no other button does anything.

Scroll the Ledger screen to show LiteCoin and press both button.  The computer beeps and displays the screen with instructions:  To begin, connect your Ledger Wallet.
It already was connected and the pin accepted.
Ok, disconnect and enter the pin again
Do that, scroll to Ethereum display and press both buttons.
The Ledger is scrolling:  vires in numeris
Strength in numbers.  Ok, cool.  Now how do I get it to communicate with the app?

Thats the Ledger manager application (required for updating your nano s and installing applications onto your nano s).

You further need to open a wallet app to access your cryptos. If you want to open your ETH wallet you have to either
1) open the native ETH wallet from ledger [1] or
2) use a 3rd party wallet to access your coins via the ledger (e.g. MyEtherWallet) [2].

Generally you have to follow this to access your coins:
  • Open the wallet application on your PC and wait for the 'To begin, connect your ledger wallet' screen
  • Plug in the nano s using the cable it got delivered with (or any other cable which does have pins for data transfers; i.e. not power-only cables)
  • Open the crypto application on your nano s
  • Enjoy accessing your cryptos safely

Did you try those steps in this order?

It won't communicate with the Chrome WebApp while that message is scrolling... that means it has "timed out" and you'll need to press both buttons and re-enter your PIN code to unlock the Ledger Nano S Device.

As bob123 said... there are TWO components that you need to access your wallet...

1. The Chrome WebApp called "Ledger Wallet Bitcoin" or "Ledger Wallet Ethereum" - These are the actual "wallet" applications
2. The "coin" app on the Ledger Nano S - This is basically a "coin" selector and these "apps" are installed to your device using the Ledger Manager which you already seem to have installed

The Chrome WebApp for Bitcoin (and other similar crypto like DOGE, LTC, BCH etc) is here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ledger-wallet-bitcoin/kkdpmhnladdopljabkgpacgpliggeeaf
The Chrome WebApp for Ethereum is here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ledger-wallet-ethereum/hmlhkialjkaldndjnlcdfdphcgeadkkm

It's also possible to use MyEtherWallet.com or MyCrypto.com for accessing Ethereum.

Hello HCP,
I don’t know where (!!!!) or how  (!!!!)  you found those sites.   The first time I tried it, it worked.  Then I copied and pasted into a word document and Control click took me to a page to Power up Chrome.  I tried that several times and got the same results.  Saved it in Chrome bookmarks and it works.

I am not a complete idiot so I wonder why getting my Ledger working is so difficult.  I am running Windows 10 with Chrome browser.  I can only access my ledger with your really strange link that I cannot find my way to at all.  When I go to the Ledger web site I don’t find any links to just start the app.  I can only get there by going through the install procedure then launch the app.

I really want to get my coins off the public sites and into my off line wallet.  But if it is this hard, am I going to wind up with them completely inaccessible?  That worries me.
I am having the same type of problem with my Trezor.  So the problem must be me.  I just cannot see what I keep doing wrong that is making this so difficult.

In closing, I really appreciate and am grateful for the time you have spent in replying to me.

For the record, the main link to the wallets is here: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/apps

As for launching them, if you have "installed" those chrome apps from the Chrome Store, you should be able to goto the Chrome "Apps" tab and see them. If you don't see the "Apps" button on your bookmarks bar:

Then you can copy/paste this into Chrome:
Code:
chrome://apps/
Unfortunately, I can't make it a clickable link as for some reason the forum software is removing the : Undecided

You should then see something like this:

Hello HCP,
I think I am making progress.  I got the long number from my Ledger for Ethereum, then logged in to Coinbase and sent some coin to that number.  I went back to my ledger and logged in.  Nothing so far.  How do I tell Chrome or what ever to go out on the internet somewhere and find that transaction I sent?

I think you have some basic lack of understanding how Ledger Nano S or Trezor work.It is actually very simple, you need your device(Ledger) and in Chrome you need :

- Ledger Manager (For add/remove apps to your Ledger Nano S)
- Ledger Wallet Bitcoin (For access apps on your Ledger, wallets for BTC,DOGE,LTC...)
- Ledger Wallet Ethereum (For access your ETH wallet on Ledger Nano S)

Then just open Chrome and click on Apps tab(HCP is posted picture for that). Then if you want to access ETH wallet on Ledger first conntect Ledger with your PC,enter PIN and choose ETH app on your Ledger. After that click on Ledger Wallet Ethereum (on Chrome) and you should be connected and see your ETH wallet with all options(send/receive tab,transactions...)

That long number which you mention should be ETH receiving address, and if(when) Coinbase is send that coins you will see them in your transaction history(in Ledger Wallet Ethereum).

To prevent to see message “Vires in Numeris” and turn off auto-lock mode go to Settings - Security - Auto-lock - Off.This will prevent Ledger to auto-lock device so you will not need to enter your PIN too many times.

I got the long number from my Ledger for Ethereum, then logged in to Coinbase and sent some coin to that number.

The 'long number' is called address.

I went back to my ledger and logged in.  Nothing so far.

Are you sure you have pasted the right address?
And are you sure the transaction already has taken place? Did you get a transaction ID?

How do I tell Chrome or what ever to go out on the internet somewhere and find that transaction I sent?

You don't have to tell chrome (its not chrome; its the ledger eth app) to 'search' your transaction.
It will appear as soon as the node from ledger has seen it.

To make sure the transaction already was sent, visit a blockchain explorer (e.g. https://etherscan.io/) and paste your long number address into the field at the top right corner.
Then what does the explorer say? Did this address receive a transaction?

If not: Then either coinbase didnt sent your TX yet or you somehow mixed up the address
If it does show the transaction: Then the ledger wallet seems to have connectivity problems at the moment.

If you connect your Ledger to Electrum ("File -> New\Restore -> Standard Wallet -> Use a hardware device" or create a watching-only wallet from the Ledger "xpub" using "File -> New\Restore -> Standard Wallet -> use a master key")... you will be able to see the "running balance" after each transaction in the "History" tab:

There is no way to do it in the "Ledger Wallet Bitcoin" Chrome webapp... you'd need to manually calculate the running balance by tallying up the value of each individual transaction. NOTE: click on the Account (under "Quick Look" heading), then click "Show All Operations" to see your full transaction history for a specific account.

thank you very much. it worked. i need this because of tax things.

@those who want to do it too. you have to unlock the HW-wallet by entering PW. and after that you need the start the BTC app at the wallat.

what i was not able to do is the read only mode. what is this "xpub" thing?

and now i have a encrypted wallet.dat. decrypting it only works with the ledger? i could not chose a pw.

xpub = Master Public Key. Can be used to generate addresses, but does NOT (and can not be used to) generate private keys. So, if "compromised", will only degrade your privacy (someone could see all your balances/transactions), but it does not degrade your security... as no-one could steal the coins.

To export the "xpub" from Ledger... load up the "Ledger Wallet Bitcoin" in Chrome, connect your ledger device, enter PIN, select Bitcoin app on device. Then in the Chrome webapp click on the account (listed under "Quick View") then "Account Settings" and "Export" (next to "Extended Public Key")... you'll get an "Xpub".

NOTE: This "xpub" won't work with "SegWit" wallets... as Electrum wants a "ypub" or "zpub" for SegWit Wallets

If you are using the SegWit chain on your Ledger, you can get the "ypub" from Electrum:
- Import your Ledger SegWit wallet into Electrum. (File -> New\Restore -> Standard Wallet -> Use hardware device -> Connect/Unlock your Ledger device -> set Derivation Path to m/49'/0'/0')
- Look at the "Wallet -> Information", you will see you actually get a "ypub" and not an "xpub".

Quote

That is a design choice by the Electrum devs... if you want to have an encrypted Electrum wallet when using Hardware Wallets, you don't use a password to unlock it, you use the device.

If you would rather use a password, then you could setup a "watching only" wallet, using the "xpub/ypub" to generate the addresses as above... but you'll never be able to send coins from it as the wallet does NOT contain private keys and you can not "connect" it to the hardware wallet to confirm transactions etc.

a last question: so it is not a problem that i have the new wallet.dat created by using the ledger? or is the setup now less secure?

and what i have to mention too is that there i am happy that there are some spots left in this forum where you can find help. postings with content and not just signature camp. posts.

yes i have a paid sig too. but i like byteball that why i am participating.

The wallet file that was created ONLY contains your xpub... as I stated, the worst that can happen is that your privacy is compromised as someone could see your transactions/balances etc... but there is no way for them to get your coins as the private keys never leave the Ledger.

a last question: so it is not a problem that i have the new wallet.dat created by using the ledger? or is the setup now less secure?

Its not a problem to create an electrum wallet (not wallet.dat) with the ledger nano s.
And its also not less secure because your private keys never leave your hardware wallet.

Without physical access to your nano s (or your backup seed), an attacker wouldn't be able to steal any coins from you,
regardless of wether he has access to your pc or not.
