Lots of things will change since we are used to bitcoin being the first. If bitcoins be overtaken by different coin maybe that will just be treated like bitcoin.
That coin will be also very volatile and exchanges will change the pair with that coin.

But for me, that happening is quite small. All couns is build up in bitcoins as the primary coin. The base will not be shaken up without removing all other coins. The bitcoins effect to the other coins are very evident. When bitcoin lowers all of the coin follows.

No one can say with certainty, it could be within this year or it could be never. My guess is ETH will take over within the next 2 years.

Most exchanges already offer ETH/ALT pairs as well as BTC/ALT pairs. I don't think that anything else will change, certainly not in a short time. If for example BTC fell very low and many alts overtook it then I think there may be other pairs added.
