I just registered since I'm looking to ask a question regarding powering USB hubs, but that's better saved for the correct forum.

Thus, I'm just posting here to say hi, and hope that I can get posting privileges soon.  I have 18 erupters running, with 42 more which will be running this weekend.  I also have some BFL preorders which are delayed (who know when they'll come in).  =/

Really looking to start using RPi to farm, but then there's the USB port compatibility issue, which I don't really want to deal with.  But that's another issue altogether as well.

In any case, hello everyone.

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

Some questions I'm hoping someone here can help me answer.  I'm already set with mining BTC with a pool...

How do I go about starting to mine an alternative coin? I have a 7850 laying dormant, and can afford to use some of my ASICminer Erupters to mine alternative SHA-256 coins.  But how do I do this?

Also, is it possible to split the USB miners on the same computer to mine different coins?

I'm mining on Pi, and you're right to be concerned about USB issues. For starters, a single Pi it won't mine more than 12 block erupters, even if there's sufficient power in the USB hub. And even with 12 erupters, you have to power 6 first, then plug in the next six after it's booted, or the network drops out. I originally thought it was a power issue, but I'm on 2A to the Pi and it still behaves that way.

Second, and seemingly randomly, individual block erupters drop out (green light comes on) at least once every 2 hours. It only lasts for 10 seconds or so before they go back to work, but if you're like me, you don't like to see any loss in productivity.

It certainly works, but I'll be getting a Beaglebone Black for my next project - I only hear good things about it.

Oh really? 12??  That won't work then.  Perhaps connecting to a real computer is the only way to go then.  Perhaps I'll have to look into a mini-itx based ultra-efficient PC for this task.  I've seen android miners as well, but unsure about their capacity =(
