Hello everyone,

I've mined BTC before but wanted to start on solomining altcoins with a single 7870 xt I have left.
Currently i've started with starcoin due to it's immaturaty and to be able to solomine. It's not on any exchange yet as far as I know but might in the future.
Hopefully it will get adopted and then I will have solomined quite a few thousand coins. Or maybe find a star block with a few thousand coins :-)

Anyone else in Starcoin or risking their computing power on very new altcoins which has a 50/50 chance of ever getting in an exchange?
Any reason to stop mining this coin?

Why do I have to start in the newbies section LOL! :-P

Grtz,
Wilhelm

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

It might be helpful to post a ref link in the OP so that the uninitiated can read up on it.

Perhaps, though, you only want to hear from the initiated.

PM me if you want to advertise on this signature.

I wouldn't use up computational power for a risk... I suggest you switch to a different alterative coin...

You never know, it could one day take off, but I probably wouldn't spend too much time going after alternative cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin has enough brand awareness at the moment to fend off against alternates.

Anybody else feel that alt coins just distract from the BTC economy and cause a lack of focus on further development?

PM me if you want to advertise on this signature.

Everyone's either trying to protect you from "making dumb decisions" or they'd like to have 8,000,000 star coin before it gets on Cryptsy all for themselves.  I can't tell.  Maybe you'll strike lucky, maybe you won't.  I doubt you'll put too much money on your bill mining it for a few days straight if you want.

It's all part of the game somehow!

EDIT: He obviously is using GPU's don't scare anyone away from altcoin mining.  Mining is fun.  I couldn't advocate anymore mine bitcoin on a GPU now could I haha

alts aren't inherently more volatile than ASICMINER shares, AVALON chips, or any of the other things money is thrown into around here.

We all know what they're for.  Some alts are cool, some truly are different or have functionally different concepts.  But there are a bunch of scamcoins designed solely for trading and speculation.

Who cares? It prevents centralization of the economy in a way

+1

The real money is in creating Bitcoin services. More untapped wealth there than mining any altcoins.

Thank you all for the replies. I know the risk and cost of mining.
My reasons are getting altcoins using solomining so I can pump and dump if ever they hit the exchange.
With a low difficulty I hit a block every hour or so.

The fun thing with starcoin is hitting bonus block up to 100000 coins :-).

Yes I also believe only a few altcoins will survive and bitcoin will remain the leader. So probably it will be a waste of Gpu but who knows it might be a winner! No risk no gain.

I am going to start building a trading bot to trade in the Btc / Usd / Eur market. This will hopefully start generating real income. Have a lot of research to do on this ;-)

What is the value of a starcoin right now?

Cryptsy has it now

100000 str = 0.25 btc
400000 str = 1 btc

100 to 100000 str can be solo mined in an hour with 1 gpu depending on luck.

So currently not worthwhile but prices are rising so fingers crossed :-)
