Hello everyone,

i've created some graphs showing the total hashing speed of the bitcoin network, and its growth:

Larger versions can be found on http://bitcoin.sipa.be/speed.png and http://bitcoin.sipa.be/growth.png.

I do Bitcoin stuff.
Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

Something to note is that the first graph is a parabole and therby exponential. Tongue

If you look it as a parabole we are already past the slow increment towrds a huge one. GHashes estimated at 170 for today. Keep mining. Wink

Not sure what you mean. A straight line on the graph would correspond to exponential growth. The only thing I notice is that the growth seems to be slowing down. My current estimate is indeed also around 170GHash/s.

Wait no I know the name. The first graph is in log scale. So it goes 0.1 -> 1 -> 10 -> etc in the form of 10**n

I'm not surprised that it's slowing down. A lot of the growth in hashing (at least 10x, maybe closer to 100x) was caused by the transition from slow CPU miners to SSE and GPU miners. Now that transition's gone as far as it can go (CPU mining is essentially worthless). Future growth will come from actual growth of the Bitcoin economy, and from Moore's Law.

Peter, these graphs are great.  Would you mind making them for alternate chains such as Namecoin or releasing your code so that others may do so?  I can provide a /q/nethash or similar API if that's what you used.

Can a change to the best-chain criteria protect against 51% to 90+% attacks without a hard fork?

Can you overlay a BTC price onto the graph? I think there'll be some good correlation.
