So I have been active here for a while now, and because I am not that technically-inclined, I tend to spend most of my time on the newbie board. Learning. I hope that the posts I have made there have contributed, and help people.

I raised a stink a while back about the splashing about of red paint by DT2, and since then (not from my post - I was only one of many), we've seen the introduction of merit. It's a great move forward, but we may not yet be in the final iteration of the system. Looking back at the motivations of DT2, I'm starting to really see their point.

Unfortunately, we're facing three issues on the Beginner's board, as follows:
- People who still don't know about the merit system, and are posting crap to rush to Jr.
- People who DO know about it, and are posting low-quality copy-pastas to get merit
- People who have figured out how to trade it, and are abusing the hell out of it

I take exception to this. We want more people involved in crypto to help the idea disseminate, and to raise support and awareness. For the mercenary, we want them to start buying in to raise the market cap.

But on a practical level, this is the number one landing pad for new users of crypto globally. And they should be set straight, immediately. For example, if abusers of the board system are on page 1, this raises associations that the entire idea of crypto is being abused, and is therefore a crook's game. That's not good.

I don't know how to apply, but I'm putting it out there publically that I would be willing to put my own time (after work) into moderating the Beginner's board, and would be vigilant about junk being posted, as well as merit-trading groups. I'm not bloodthirsty, I just care about this community, and I don't want it ruined. My approach would be to warn first, ban later. But you may be sure that there would be plenty of bans.

Is there a formal way to apply?

H.

You have to report an astronomical number of posts and have a ridiculously high accuracy rate.  I don't think it's something you apply for.

I've been a mod on a few forums. It's a thankless task, and it makes you a lot of enemies. You only have to look at the bitching that goes on here to realise that you can't please everybody.

That's a bit disheartening to be honest :/

I report crap as I see it, and have 100% accuracy to date. But I don't have 15 hours per day to put into just that activity. The hours that I can give would be (hopefully) useful, but if it's a numbers game....meh :/

Thanks for the reply anyhow, Og, appreciate it. I'll leave this out there. Maybe it'll be considered.

I have also. And I know it's not a job that bring friends. My motivation here is the integrity of the Beginner's board, not to make new internet friends. And I am not affected by new internet enemies either.

I don't understand what is disheartening about this as criteria. We would not be better off if the mods were selected with low accuracy rates or few posts reported; what good would that moderator be? A moderator that doesn't report many posts would not be useful, and worse yet if their accuracy is low then this means they would be counter-productive and come off as abusive. I expect the moderators to report a lot of posts and it's meaningless unless their accuracy is top-notch. Which part of that is disheartening?

It is very good that you're reporting posts as you come across them, because if everybody did this then the forum would be cleaned up rather quickly. I'm sure not every moderator has 15-hours per day to put into the forum, but some people are unbelievably efficient with their time and sometimes those people are exponentially more efficient at certain tasks in ways you cannot imagine; these are our staff. I'm pretty sure becoming a moderator is an Invite only sort of deal, based on your previous activity around here.

Can you imagine if it was that easy?

This forum would have 50,000+ moderators.  Each moderator would make pennies...

It's down to theymos to pick the moderators. If you speak a local language and are reporting posts in that local section, then there's likely a need for a moderator and you'll have a somewhat better chance of being picked to moderate that section. I believe there's been polls in local sections to have a vote on who should moderate the section, whether theymos agrees to that is whether it will happen or not.

I think theymos discourages "applying" for moderator though.

If you don't have time to report a lot of posts you probably don't have time to be a mod here. Moderating is a hundred times more work than just reporting occasional posts whilst you're here browsing. Reporting posts is the best way to become a mod because it shows staff you would be beneficial to the board  but it's not always about being the person who reports the most either nor do you need to be on here '15 hours a day'. Rickbig didn't have anywhere near the current top reporters but he was active in reporting when there were no mods around so it was a logical choice to have him on board.

Thank you all for the great answers.

I'll lock this thread now, and keep reporting the junk, I guess Smiley
