Ion Weekly Update: 6/19/18
Every week, the Ion team provides an update on what they’re working on and how the platform is evolving.
Welcome to the first official update from the Ion team!
Ion is an AutoML API that has been in development since 2017. It leverages open-source machine learning packages and customized hyper-parameter optimization algorithms to find the machine learning pipeline with the best fit for your data. Currently, the API optimizes machine learning pipelines from H2O.ai and scikit-learn, with Spark ML and others coming soon.
Additional things we’ll be working on include:
Automated feature extraction capabilities
Hyper-parameter optimization and AutoML for time-series models
Support for more complex modeling techniques such as Neural Networks and Bayesian modeling
Ionized products, which are AutoML products built with Ion to solve specific machine learning problems
Ion is currently in beta. We are hosting a meetup today to demonstrate the capabilities of the API and to get ideas for machine learning challenges in financial services that can benefit from automation. If you’re interested, please stop by!

Startup contests—and I’ve been to loads—all share a common energy, an ambitious spirit, a love of the future and the futuristic. Fintech in Luxembourg has all that, of course, but it has something else too. It has a relaxed togetherness, forged by the smallness of the country and the immediacy of its scene. It’s as if the stage is smaller while the stakes are bigger. Picture a 30-something CEO whose company is just six months old, mingling in a small room with Luxembourg’s finance minister, reps from major innovation hubs, senior people from global banks and fund houses, and expert consultants—that’s what I mean. Everything seems within reach. Additionally, fintech types—separate from other tech startup orbiters—have a dusty charm to them. You don’t get the glitzy shine that you see in entrepreneurs in the video game, music, or social media industries. Fintech CEOs still wear suits (though not ties) and tend to have a nerdy understanding that not everyone will get (or care) what their product can do. These observations are fresh in my mind from last night’s Fintech Awards Luxembourg (powered by the LHoFT and KPMG), where thirteen amazing young startups competed for the top prize of €50,000. In the pitching room, the jury and audience heard about a chatbot named Alf, a regulatory-as-a-service proposition, “fintech in a box”, unsupervised algorithms, and loads more. It struck me that comparing these companies must really have been impossible for the jury, because many of them were utterly dissimilar to each other. “Fintech” is an insanely broad term, if you think about it. Among the finalists were a company whose product helps with change management; a pan-European savings investment platform; a finance document machine translator; a payment platform for African farmers—how can you compare these products, whose goals and scope and purpose are totally different? Web 3.0 Well, the jury found a way, because they ended up with winners. Taking home the grand prize was Hydrogen, a company from New York that offers a sort of front office for building your own fintech solution. Pitching on behalf of Hydrogen was Mike Kane, co-founder and CEO. Mike’s co-founder Matthew is also his twin brother, which marks the second time that founding twin brothers have won the Fintech Awards Luxembourg. I offer this information as purely anecdotal, but if another twin duo wins next year then I’m going to have a word with the jury. Mike took the stage for his five-minute pitch with lots of energy and a slight flutter of nervousness in his voice. He wore a t-shirt with his company’s name on it, jeans, and a blazer. Although he later said he was not an engineer, he sort of reminded me of one—I suppose he spends lots of time with them at work. On stage, he outlined the problem: building applications is extremely complicated. Commonplace are 30-step workflows that barely fit on a single PowerPoint slide… but his company offers a platform to cut through all that. He described it as a “an entire front office for a fintech-in-a-box”, where companies could build what they need from tools like blockchain, machine learning, business intelligence, dashboards, and more, all deployable via an API anywhere in the world. An analogy he made has also stuck with me: Hydrogen is to web 3.0 as Google and Amazon are to web 2.0. In other words, the evolution of the web has to do with new types of digital infrastructure and architecture. Hydrogen means to be at the centre of that. Ambitious, yes, a bit outrageous, of course, but that’s the startup culture for you: having the audacity to reach for new galaxies has to be something you can do even over breakfast. The language crowd Taking the first runner-up prize was Lingua Custodia, whose founder and CEO Olivier Debeugny delivered a charming pitch. He wore the uniform of the male fintech entrepreneur: suit, no tie, collar open. He spoke swiftly in his French accent but confidently, and if he was nervous then it didn’t show but for his extremely tight grip on the microphone. Lingua Custodia is a translation company specialised in financial documents, and you can bet that this went over well in Luxembourg, a country besieged by languages. The tool runs on artificial intelligence so can learn from mistakes and customise itself to user needs. So far it can handle eight languages but, according to Debeugny, it would take just three months to teach it a new one. Regtech for the win Second runner-up was Apiax, a regtech from Switzerland. Co-founder Philip Schoch explained the company’s product, a platform on which regulations are transformed into sets of digital rules. Regtech seems to be particularly dear to Luxembourg, given how much time and effort is being put into regulatory compliance all around the finance sector. In fact, 2018 is the first Fintech Awards Luxembourg in which it wasn’t a regtech that won (AIFMaps in 2017; Governance.io in 2016). Additionally, during his closing speech, Luxembourg’s Minister of Finance Pierre Gramegna commented, “Our regulator, the CSSF, is one of the most innovative regulators in the world.” He explained how reactive the CSSF has been on cryptocurrencies and other technologies, and how it approaches industry actors like customers. “When you go and see a regulator and he considers you a customer then you know you’re in the right place,” he said. “And the right place to be is Luxembourg.” Doing good An additional prize was given this year, the Financial Inclusion Award. Represented by cryptoeconomics specialist Maria Mateo, the Luxembourgish startup BitValley took home this award. BitValley works in agricultural micro-insurance, helping famers lower their risks.

Hydro Weekly Update: 6/22/18
Every Friday, the Hydro dev team provides updates on what they’ve been working on over the past week.
Happy first few days of summer! Here is what we have been working on:
Finalizing Snowflake resolvers. As Noah talked about in last week’s update, resolvers are crucial to the infrastructure of Snowflake. We have finalized three resolvers which we plan to release with the launch of Snowflake. These three resolvers can be seen on GitHub. They handle account ownership, community reputation, and user KYC (know-your-customer). We are also excited to see resolvers developed by the community — there are nearly endless possibilities for useful resolvers. Expect to see some example resolver specs in the HCDP in the near future.
Adding tests to Snowflake. After finalizing our Snowflake resolvers, we felt we were in a good place to make sure that everything is working properly. Noah and I added a large suite of tests to the Snowflake truffle library over the week. We would like to encourage developers out there to take a look at our tests and see if they can find bugs or issues. We intend to be releasing a bug program for Snowflake via the HCDP soon as well.
Assessing API vulnerabilities. Using SonarQube, we ran scans of our code base and we very pleased with the results. We found no severe bugs or vulnerabilities. I went through the API and handled the “code smells” that were reported from SonarQube. We plan on running more tests of this nature and static code analysis from other providers going forward.
Fixing an issue with multiple transactions in one block on Infura. While testing our Hydro API, we encountered an unexpected issue with Infura. When handling a high volume of transactions, the API often sends multiple transactions in the same block. Since Infura uses load balancing on their nodes, we ran into scenarios where a node was unaware of pending transactions and would overwrite the nonce of the pending transaction. We worked through several solutions to this and finally decided that the best decision is to move away from Infura. We are now hosting with QuikNode and using Infura as a backup.

Q.1 (khonsu): What kind of banking relations do you have as a company, do they (banks) understand what you are trying to do ? Any VCs approached you for funding ? explain your business model.
A.1 (Shane): Hydrogen has existed since 2009 in the form of Hedgeable. Hedgeable is a consumer-facing online investing app, and the tech behind it eventually spawned the Hydrogen tech platform. The story of how the transition happened goes essentially like this: (1) Hedgeable was disrupting banks & investing firms, (2) banks & investing firms started contacting us and seeing if we would help them digitize & automate their own businesses, (3) we started packaging up our tech and selling it to the banks. There was so much demand for this from financial institutions that we spun out a new company (Hydrogen).
So to get back to your original question: we have some long-standing relationships in the banking & finance world, and to this day we have inbound leads from that space coming in every week. The key thing to keep in mind is that these institutions move extremely slowly, but they do understand the core value prop of our platform. Many of these firms are still in the midst of basic digitization efforts (i.e. moving from really slow offline processes to simple digital infrastructure), and that is the primary thing we are helping them with in early stages. But they are also keen on blockchain tech and they will naturally turn to us for that once they reach that point. We do have a few relationships with big financial companies in which Hydro/blockchain are already part of the discussion.
We have revenue and don't need to rely on VCs. It is our general philosophy that building a business sustainably with actual clients and revenue is a good approach, but we would consider working with the right VC if that came to be and we wanted to scale more quickly. Right now, that is not an immediate concern for us.
Our business model is in charging developers and enterprises to access the Hydrogen technology platform, which currently consists of products like Atom, Ion, and Hydro. Developers pay a per-user fee to hit our core APIs, while large enterprises negotiate custom (usually multi-year) contracts with us that typically include recurring revenue. Hydro, specifically, is being offered for free right now, as we attempt to gain adoption. But it is important to note that Hydro is just one piece of our ecosystem.
