I think a lot of people you meet daily have absolutely no idea about cryptocurrencies, when they think crypto - they think bitcoin.

And then they just trash btc because they've heard it's used for buying drugs!

This is crazy, it has potential to be the biggest currency of the future and people have no idea.

They may have hear about it - but that's where it stops.

I know people working ins banks(!) and some of them have no idea about crypto.

Still though, I guess you have to start somewhere and having the smallest idea is better than having none.

It's not about how many people heard about cryptocurrency. The introduction of a new era of mass adoption of crypto-currencies is governed by governments and business. Crypto-currencies will not become mainstream until they feel safe to allow crypto-currencies to circulate in general trade. The situation in this or that country is also of decisive importance. The government of one country can allow crypto-currencies to become massively popular, while another country will prohibit their use. Therefore, I believe that it is still too early to talk about the global mainstream.

That's closer than we think. When everyone will know about cryptocurrency amount of money we will get a new mainstream. That is people's greedy. Nuff said.

Everyone at my university knows about crypto but still same situation like selenophile. The only crypto currency that they are aware of is Bitcoin. And also they think of it as a scam project or something like that. I really wonder why. Still, some locals here are quite informed about cryptocurrencies

I think it is still a long, long way from being mainstream. When you say mainstream I assume you mean that most people use crypto in their day to day activities.

We are at the very least, 10-20 years away from that point. There is certainly a lot of potential for widespread usage, so long as corporations and governments continue to stay mostly out of the way.

For sure, I definitely agree.

Now imagine how far away we are from actually using crypto in our daily lives as part of the transactions. It's crazy when you think about it.

I'd agree that we are far away for mainstream and by saying mainstream I think that cryptocurrency won't eat the fiat and destroy it but rather that these will co-exist in the future. So far governments were okay with it and this has to do with the decentralized nature of cryptocurrency in general you can't ban it, you can't press the button and stop it. We've seen it with torrents they can't take them down, one site is down one day other one shows up. They are aware of it and thus are trying to regulate it. But for crypto to become mainstream we need to stop to look at it as an asset and start to use it and look at it as the real currency to buy ordinary stuff with it.

With almost every new thing is obtained in this way, people do not understand it and therefore do not like it. So it is with every new beginning. That will be until it is accepted by most people around the world.  Smiley

If you take into account the fact that Germany has adopted and legalized bitcoin, then I think that very much now will change in Europe, because Germany still has a very strong influence on Europe, I think that Europe will now be legalized bitcoin

I think a lot of people you meet daily have absolutely no idea about cryptocurrencies, when they think crypto - they think bitcoin.

Most of my friends who were tech-fluent in university do know Bitcoin and cryptocurrency though. People knowledge about cryptocurrency are heavily depends on their generation and exposure to technology. For example, my parents generation are less likely to know about Paypal, let alone something complicated like crypto. While my peers are more likely to know about it.

And then they just trash btc because they've heard it's used for buying drugs!

This is crazy, it has potential to be the biggest currency of the future and people have no idea.

I'm pretty sure this paradigm will change soon as more mainstream media start reporting more things related to crypto in the right way.

The same sentences and words that they are saying over and over these past years where bitcoin is just starting, there are also memes for that, bitcoin is a scam, illegal, bubble, abused and crash, most of the people here in my country don't know that there are other coins existing apart from bitcoin and what does our local mainstream media say? beware of scam, cause they've interviewed a guy who is investing in some coins or ICO's got scammed from obvious scam coins.

You'd first need to define what "mainstream" means when refering to cryptocurrencies:

1) does mainstream means 'how many have heard about cryptos?'
Then I'd say cryptocurrencies are far from being mainstream. As of now, the average joe knows what Bitcoin is, and perhaps they've heard about one or two other cryptos, but that's as far as it goes. The reason behind this is the media where the exposure of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, and sometimes ETH or Ripple has been on the rise since last year, even before the crazy month that it was December.

2) does mainstream means 'how many people actually own and use cryptocurrencies?'
With this one I'd say that cryptocurrencies as a whole are yet to reach a mainstream status. So far, I haven't read about an increase in the usage of cryptos, or adoption from marchants, but I've reading about an increasing customer demand in exchanges, although, this could mean people trying to invest in the popular coins (BTC or ETH), so it doesn't mean that people are becoming more aware of cryptocurrencies and they're buying like crazy (something I would expect once cryptos have gone mainstream)

So, in general, cryptocurrencies are very far from being mainstream, only a handful of cryptos are known to the general public, but those are the only ones that have actually gone mainstream.

I agree with you. To popularize the idea, support and adoption of a cryptocurrency for real business and economics is needed. So this is very far. Globalization in the financial sense is a rather difficult task. Although on the other hand appeared Pedro. ....

It’s not as close as we think unfortunately. It’s true more people are investing and participating in crypto but more than half them are only here because they think crypto is a way of making easy money. They hear things like , oh x coin is so good and they put money in it. They don’t care about blockchain technology or anything. This won’t help crypto to be mainstream.
