Hi everyone especially to the newbies using MEW wallet.
I read many posts in fb cried out of their MEW wallet was hacked and all their crypto assets were gone inside. When I ask them did they done something wrong? Then answered "No", in fact they never ever shared their PK to anyone and to any forms they filled up but still hacked or victimized by phishing sites.

IMHO,based on my experience using myetherwallet, I think its very safe because you have hold the private key. But the problem in MEW is very prone to phishing because its a browser wallet. If you are careless enough to check the site before loging in, then expect all your tokens inside will be lost forever.

Here are my 3 golden rules, using MEW wallet to avoid hacker or phishing sites:

1. Do not share your private key to anyone, and keep it in to a very secured place in your PC or make a backup in a hard drive if you like.

2. Bookmark the myetherwallet site to your browser to avoid phishing sites. Use the bookmarked site every time you login. Using metamask is also a great idea.

3. Never ever believe when you receive a message in your email from MEW support , (pretending they are from myetehrwallet team asking you to click the MEW site link for an update and if you will not click it then all your coins inside will be lost), because the MEW team reminds us that they never ever sending any messages to any email addresses providing with their links and asking to click for an update. Once you click it and login then say goodbye to your tokens

Hope it helps. Thank you!

These tips can be applied to everything.
- Never click on a link you get in your email.
- Always bookmark websites like exchanges and web wallets that you visit frequently.
- Store you private key offline like on a paper or a hardware wallet.

Also to check if the Myetherwallet that you're using is the legit one there is a MYETHERWALLET LLC [US] before the link always check that.
And dont ever save your private key in your harddisk, maybe place it in email so that you're more secure to the hackers.

How to Protect Yourself

Even if you get a scary message, navigate to the site yourself.
Check the URL. Check the URL again.

Use bookmarks.
Be aware of what Google Ads look like. Never ever click them. Get an adblocker.
Don’t ever trust DMs.

Verify, verify, verify.
If the offer seems too good to be true, it isn’t true.

Don’t let fear overcome your common sense.

Turn off Slack emails. This prevents malicious DMs from getting you via email.
ONLY unlock your wallet when you want to send a transaction. Check your balance via Etherscan

Actionable Items You Should Do
Block malicious URLs by installing
 — EAL
 — MetaMask

Report
 — Report to the Ethereum Scam Database so EAL/MetaMask are up to date.
 — Report to Google & Firefox via Report a Phishing Page
 — Report to Microsoft IE & Edge via How to report a phishing Web site
 — Report Google Adwords Campaigns via Feedback on AdWords ads

Get a Hardware Wallet
 — Ledger
 — TREZOR
 — Protip: Find your favorite service, buy via that services affiliate link (ie: the footer on MyEtherWallet). The price is the same for you, but your favorite service gets a % of the sale! Win-Win-Win!!!

Is it safe to use Metamask with MEW?

It is recommended at MEW to use metamask but sometimes i wonder how trustworthy metamask is. I read somewhere that if you visit other sites while stil signed in to metamask, they can steal your information.

Using JSON file  to open myetherwallet is also a good help to avoid phising or hack. This way you will not compromised your private key. Make sure you have  a back up for JSON file, in case you lost your private key you can still open your wallet.

The only one simple thing to run mew safely. Run it in offline mode.
https://myetherwallet.github.io/knowledge-base/offline/running-myetherwallet-locally.html

MEW github already shared a lot of explanation and step about how to run mew offline and do offline transaction too. It may become the best way to run mew.

Thanks for the tips. It was very nice, especially to those who are still new in the cryptocurrency world. One of my friends who is new in cryptocurrency has made a mistake of sharing her private key to an airdrop form, but good thing her wallet is empty.

I mentored her from the start until now on how to manage her online wallets, trading cryptocurrencies, participating in airdrops and bounties, and so on. It's good that she's learning fast, especially when it comes to securing her wallets.

Yes this is also one of the best way to avoid phishing sites. I usually do that even I use a bookmark.

I had a friend that are securing his Private Key and have done all of the important things that needs to be done when using his MEW wallet but suddenly he had a transaction that are getting 0.03 of his ETH from his mew wallet the weird thing here is he doesn't give something about the Altcoins stored in it, Well I think it is because a browser wallet it is really prone to hackers and even though you are doing things that let's the wallet have more security than a mere password it is not really safe to a hacker that can access a wallet that have a connected with the internet.

Very good and correct three rules that reduce the likelihood that you will be hacked by anyone. It seems to me that it is very correct that people create such rules for themselves, because many still suffer from their carelessness

Most of the time, if your token value is very high, so I suggest you buy a hardware wallet, because it can ensure the safety of more, for now, the safety of using local purse is still not high enough.
