GPU fan noise

Just wondering what everyones experiences are with the fan noises of graphics cards

I have 3 different types

A sapphire 5770 which is in my HTPC which is pretty quite (hence why it is in the HTPC)

An Asus 5850 directCU which is very quite

and 3 XFX 5830 which are incredibly loud but are the most stable and clocks higher than the other cards without a voltage bump

Also any suggestions on quite ones as my wife wants me to build her a PC which I rekon I can put 2 cards in

If you really care about noise you'd probably have to get custom GPU coolers and they're not exactly cheap.
The advantage is the larger heatsinks and better fans (check out the reviews).

Plus, some assembly required, very similar to changing out the heatsink on a CPU:
clean out the old thermal paste, apply new paste, making sure to NOT over do it.

I had a 4850 that was loud as balls and I had to run it at like 90% constantly to get remotely good temps.
Now I have an XFX 6870 with dual fans that runs very quiet, even at 100% I can't hear it unless I'm about a foot away from the box.

    The following might help as it had helped me somewhat.

1.Use Arctic silver on your current GPU stock coolers very carefully.It should keep conductivity of heat away from the GPU allowing the FAN to use less RPM's theoretically.
2.Use a modified fan on the stock cooler with less decibels but a higher CFM rate.
3.Have a good silent but high CFM side case fan is usually the best way to keep the temps down.
4.Or use a modified cooler.
5.Any combination of the above.

I get that on mine, just watch the heat and be careful not to overdo it.
