Do you feel the difficulty level will slow down increasing for a short while if this article is true? Symantec disables 500,000 botnet-infected computers. Quote "The computers are also used to create an online currency called Bitcoin which can be used to pay for goods and services." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24348395

omg half a million "cpu" miners! Exactly! Botnets represent such a small portion of the hash rate that it is irrelevant. It's shameful that the article would say something like that now.
|
A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?

omg half a million "cpu" miners! Haha, CPU miners sounds about right to me. Probably makes a grand total of 0.01% difference to the network. Yipee...

hey! on the other hand assuming they are all "i3" -> 11mhps * 500,000 = 5,500,000 that is 5.5 Terrahash that is quite some money someone lost....... well they are stealing it in first place

Its only a matter of time before the botnet network go back to its original size. Although a quarter of the zombie network has been taken out of action, the upgraded version of the botnet will be more difficult to take down, said Ms Cox. Taking down infected networks is a "thankless task", according to Sophos, a rival to Symantec.
"It's a bit like trying to deal with the rabbit problem in Australia - you know you're unlikely ever to win, but you also know that you have to keep trying, or you will definitely lose," said Sophos head of technology Paul Ducklin.

This makes sense, especially considering high CPU usage might raise suspicions and the payoff (bitcoin mining) is not worth it. I think they were saying the click fraud and such were generating 100x the money bitcoin mining was generating. Its not economical to run a botnet for Bitcoin mining.

The impact is too small base on the network hashrate now. The bitcoin difficulty still increasing like no body's business.
