I just saw the Merit system and it is new to me and I read some post about the new merit system and I am asking if it is true that it is hard for a newbie to reach a higher rank because of the newly added system on this forum.

It's actually very easy. You don't need any merit to become a Jr Member and only 10 to get to Member. If you use the forum for what it is intended, discussion about Bitcoin, then that will be easy. What has become hard is to simply rank up by spamming the forum. That is why the merit system was introduced.

It depends on what sort of poster you are. It's harder for people to farm accounts just by making lazy contributions because now you need a certain amount of merit to move through the ranks. However, it still takes a long time to rise through the ranks and most people should be able to get sufficient merit during that time so poor posters will struggle but good quality poster should probably breeze through.

This merit system is good system with the purpose, when I joined this forum no merit system applied yet but it was easier just to "post" and wait couple of week then your rank will be higher. On that time I thought whether how is long time of this forum just in several month there are crowded with hero and legendary member here.....It will not long term for the forum because unclear what and who is the "real" hero and legendary member in the forum meaning that they should know and mastering this forum very well.

With this merit system, every member is forced to post with high quality. And posting is needed reading first, so indirectly this merit system train the member to read then he can post in good quality. Now merit system just allow who is qualify which is determined by the forum, this portion to be improve in the system to standardize define clearly "high quality" and objectivity. Not just like and dislike, the rewarding merit should be accountability and responsibility. There is a thread for sample of standardized quality of post, if you have opinion please to share : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3010719.0

It is hard only for shitposters. Someone with the sense of writing quality posts will have no problems though. And, it needs equal efforts for a newbie or a Sr. member to rank up after the Merit system has been implemented. So anyone with any rank can only rise up if they can contribute something to the forum, otherwise they should find some other source to earn a few bucks instead of wasting their time here as it won't work anymore for them (I'm talking about signature campaign spammers).

~

Hey, how did you get those Merits?  Roll Eyes Don't tell me you are a quality poster. Do you have any friends here in the forum?  Roll Eyes I guess so.

P.S: Sorry for being off-topic in the second portion of my post.

Yes, if you don't know anything about cryptocurrency and rules in this forum, and not if you know the details about cryptocurrency and rule in this forum. I oftentime see some threads that have good quality and can be understood by me so easily anyone who has merit will give it. So, sMerit depends on you, you will hard to up your rank if you're lazy to make a good post, and vice versa.

It only depends on the user itself. Smart newbie or person with the background (happen to notice this forum late) can have a better chance than, for instance, me to rank up to Full Member. I can see it helped with farming accounts and people try to write some meaningful post. But unfortunately, it didn't improve the habit to read what others say before expressing your opinion. Now we still see people writing same thing over and over again. And potentially easy to miss the quality post. If no one read, no one notices it.

Give everyone power or no one at all.

I see many forums that give everyone the opportunity to gain (and lose) points.

By losing points also allows for people to learn what to and not say in forums and the same for gaining points also obviously.

The best method I have seen in a forum is that everyone is allowed a maximum total of 3 Up and Downvotes a day regardless of status.

Dam that tell us how people are spreading negativity about the merit system around the forum. New people are coming here and with their second post they are asking about merit system and telling us that they are reading it's getting harder to rank up with merit system.

@op you should focus on your posts and not on what others are staying about it. You keep doing your part of work and the curators will do their job. It's just about being straight, honest over the forum and nothing else.

Everyone has the opportunity to gain points, nothing's stopping you. Well theymos says that he doesn't see the need for demerits tho you'll earn nothing if you keep writing nonsense posts and now it's better to write less frequently but tend to keep quality at the max.

Why's that the best method? Ranking up would be even slower then and people will have to keep coming back to certain posts if they've blown all their upvotes for that day. Better proposition would bee will up and downvotes and every upvote past 10 would go to merit.

Need some spare btc for a new PC that can at least run Adobe Dreamweaver.

Your learning and giving commitment to the forum will only go in the bypass speed to reach the next higher ranks. Actually after this system came low rank member does not get the merits for their post.
But still if you make the posts which explains the technical assistance and statistical data I am damn sure no one will ignore your thread to pass away giving merits.

That is not going to be a problem for you to reach Jr. Member rank, here everything is like it was before, only activity is needed. The next step is also not a catastrophe, for Member rank you need 10 merits only and you can get it with just one comment actually. Work hard and merit system will look usual to you, as nothing special  Wink

However, it still takes a long time to rise through the ranks and most people should be able to get sufficient merit during that time so poor posters will struggle but good quality poster should probably breeze through.

Just to put merit into perspective. I've received 78 merit so far.
Most of them where in a handful of "donations" where generous users gave 5 or even 20 merit for my already existing FAQ, which must probably be considered a "top-quality" post far above the norm (I'm not bragging here, it's just a FAQ sticky post that's been in the making for a while).

Leaving my FAQ aside, in reality, I've received some 20 merit or so within a month.
And that's definitely not very much when you compare that to the traditional "Activity" which grew by 14 every 2 weeks.

Conclusion: I think it's become a lot tougher for newbies to rank up.
Even I find it hard to generate merit (which I only need for smerit to give to contributors in my FAQ-thread).
We can't seriously expect all newbies to write sticky-worthy FAQs Wink

For reference, I've highlighted my merit,
Green is "real" merit for general posts.
Red is merit for my FAQ.
Blue ist my special donation.

I'm finding it a little unbelievable that OP registered today and is already asking a *stupid* question about merits--in a new thread, no less.

OP, please do yourself, and the rest of the bitcointalk community, a favor and do a lot of reading before you start creating threads about issues that have been addressed at length.  Assuming you're not an account farmer's alt account (which I think you are), if you're starting out here concerned with ranking up, you're here for all the wrong reasons.  And given the way your post was structured, you're not likely to earn any merit and you'll stay a Jr. Member until all the stars in the galaxy burn themselves out.

Sorry, I am just curious on the ranks and I saw this merit thing and I asked if it is hard for newbies to rank up . I am very sorry if I did wrong on writing a thread and asking this kind of question and I am not a "Farmer's alt account" I am just a new member and asking for guides...

I always say that one is never too late in trying or overcoming a certain aspect. If you have genuine intentions towards this forum, then I guess you'll be dedicated in posting informative replies or opinions constructively and wouldn't mind the wait incase your posts does not get recognize. For me, rank should not be the sole basis of your credibility and ability. So don't be in a hurry, take time to learn and as you go along the way you'll be rewarded accordingly just as long as you contribute something interesting and new. We all experienced having a hard time ranking up, the merit system does not make it any harder especially if you know that you are being a responsible member of this forum. So have a different perspective towards it, use ot as a motivation to do better. Good luck!

I support your opinion. Maybe it is going to be a new changing of the forum in the future - to not allow newbies to start a new thread.
