There is a difference between signature advertising and consistently posting spammy threads to spread your ref link around. It was acceptable at first, but now it's very lame.

Signature advertising is great IF you have something valuable to say, it is even more spammy than links, if you go around with your out of contest comments just to stick in your colorful signature.
