The progressive waves coin will be the etherium contenders. There are smart contracts, Dex, token creation and Proof of Stake. If agan hold waves will be free tokens -token monthly.

There are many projects that are similar and have the ability to do smart contracts such as Neo, Lisk, Stratis and many more. But thing with ethereum is that it is the first one and thus you already have somewhat built infrastructure. Ethereum has decentralized exchanges built on the platform already and there are some talks about building bridges between other coins to enable blockchain swaps to enable you for instance to send btc on ethereum network do some work with smart contracts and send back the rest.
I do think that maybe IOTA or even NANO (old raiblocks) might have a chance against ethereum if they lunch smart contracts on their platform. Because there are no fees and it is just a psychological feeling of something being free where as you have to pay on etherum to transact with smart contracts. Other than these 2 biggest rival is NEO, in my opinion Waves is competitor but it is lower in terms of marketcap and recognition.
