quick question:

1>i backed up a wallet.dat.

2>generated new receive address.

3>lost wallet.

4>restore backup.

is there any possibility to get btc sent to new receive address with a backup made before the wallet.dat was backed up. thanks in advance.

(i know the new receive address, however i do not have a backup of the .dat after it was generated)

A wallet (by default) always contains 100 unused keys.

Assuming of course that you are using the Bitcoin-Qt wallet, and that you didn't set or change the password after backing up.

thanks in advance for answering me so quickly.

more details then:

the backup i'm using is dated 6 months ago.

as far as receive addresses the latest wallet which i do no have a backup file from had a total of maybe 8 receive addresses.

when i use the backup i made 6 months ago it only displays 2 receive addresses(your address and (no lable)) with the latest transaction dated about 2 months ago.

right now i'm missing 3 important transactions and possibly 2-3 not so important minor ones. those 3 transactions i'm missing are within the last 2 weeks.

the wallet currently lists 24 total transactions and was started in 2010.

i'm using the official 0.8.1 it is possible the wallet i backed up from was a version older.

the laptop with the latest wallet was stolen on vacation a week ago.

You'll get your money back, just restore backup.

Your OP says:

1>i backed up a wallet.dat.

2>generated new receive address.

3>lost wallet.

4>restore backup.

But it sounds more like:

  • Backed up wallet.dat
  • Lots of time passes during which transactions are sent, and new addresses are generated
  • Recently generated a new receive address.
  • Lost wallet
  • Restore backup

If the sum of the total number of addresses generated after the backup PLUS the total number of transactions sent from the wallet after the backup exceeds 100, then the only way you are going to get any bitcoins back that are associated with the recently generated address is to find the lost wallet.

The real question is: how did you lose it?

thanks again for the quick replies, i really dont believe it would be over 100 transactions at all.

i had more recent backups however. they were on the laptop as well.

laptop was stolen while traveling.

Is your bitcoin Qt updated? I mean synced properly?
Otherwise Simply try to upload that wallet file to blockchain.info/wallet/import-wallet and check if funds are there or not.
