I think Ron Paul is the most liberty oriented politician in the US. So I posted this idea on the Ron Paul forums to see if it gets any traction.

Its a bitcoin money bomb  Smiley

I dont usually agree with voting or with politicians btw.

You should edit your post and add a link to some of the simple explanations of what bitcoin is Smiley

EDIT: and also give a sample of exchange price to USD, so people clearly understand they'll be able to cash them out

Ok will do. I was hoping to ease people into it  rather than hit them in the mouth with bitcoins . Grin

Yea, just do it in a smooth way and tickle curiosity rather than have people think how it's a scam/ponzi scheme/etc.  Wink

Ron Paul forums is a good place to hit up occasionally.  A lot of people there are gold bugs though, and there ready to pounce.

I remember a bitcoin thread on the ron paul forums a while back. Only guy who came around was hugolp, the rest probably thought it was a scam. Looks like this thread will get the same treatment, seeing as it has more than a hundred views and no replies.

Campaigns can't accept anonymous donations due to campaign laws.

"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

They would rather be blatant about accepting funds from lobby groups .  Tongue

Bitcoins don't have to be anonymous... it's true that it becomes a little harder than just displaying a fixed donation address, but unique addresses may be generated after donors provide necessary personal data.

I would donate some bitcoins to Ron Paul's campaign.  I was actually looking for a way to contact the campaign to ask if they would consider accepting bitcoin donations but I can't find any kind of contact.

Please let us know if you get any responce.

Wow I think you may be the guy that introduced me to bitcoins (your dailypaul post) for the first time!  Keep it up -- even if people are just lurking (like me) it gets the word out.
Thanks!

I tried this long ago.  Bitcoin is a non-starter for politcal donations, because the campaign has to go to great lengths to be able to prove where all of those donations came from, due to campaign finance laws.  You can't even donate to a PAC with bitcoins.

Can't you donate cash to a campaign.  If you fill out the same paperwork whats the difference.  Though I do see your point.

For all practical purposes, you cannot donate cash to a campaign.  Bitcoin makes the autonomy thing even worse for campaign finance tracking, because even if there were a bitcoin donate button that provided you a newly generated bitcoin address after you identified yourself, those addresses never die.  So if an opponent wanted to set you up for a campaign lawsuit, all he would have to do is find one of these addresses and send too much money to it.  The campaign couldn't keep it, and they can't really return it either.  Creates a huge legal mess, so It's just easier (for now) to ignore Bitcoin for campaign finances.  It'll come someday.  But not yet.

Agreed.  Though I suppose you could put a notice that any excess funds will be donated to a charity of your choice.
