Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Most exchanges accept payment via bank transfer or credit card, and some are willing to work with Paypal transfers.
Here is some information
Coinbase: is the world's largest bitcoin broker. In the United States you can buy bitcoin with a connected bank account via ACH bank transfer. In Europe you can buy with your bank account via SEPA transfer. Purchases made with ACH take 5 days for the coins to be delivered, while SEPA purchases take less than two days.
Gdax: US customers can fund their Coinbase Exchange trading accounts via ACH or bank wire. Residents of Europe and the UK can fund with SEPA transfer.

baobao2000 had good reply but I would also add that if you are thinking of using Credit Card that some some card companies (like Chase) will not allow use of card to buy crypto. I know this from personal experience. Bank account is the best/cheapest way to go but usually takes several days.

You can also look into the Gemini exchange in which you can also purchase BTC and ETH with US Dollars.

You can purchase them locally by using localbitcoins.com   With this method, you meet a seller at a coffee shop like starbucks and make the trade there in public.

Buying bitcoin is relatively easy especially knowing that you're from the United States, whereas most Bitcoin exchanges that accepts FIAT are available. You can purchase bitcoin by using Coinbase[1], Gemini[2], and other similar exchanges, and also through LocalBitcoins[3] if you prefer buying the bitcoin off a certain person and not a company. It's up to you.
