What graphics card would you recommend.

i am looking at buying a new graphics card to improve my gh/s rat currently i am getting about 7 mh/s from my cpu. I have about £150 to spare for it and am wondering what people would recommend.

Radeon 5800 series cards are the best. In your price range, 5830, 5850, or 5870. These are getting hard to find, but less so in Europe I think. 5870 might be out of your price range, so I recommend trying to find a 5850 extreme. These have been known to do 400 Mh/s even at stock voltage in some cases. Even a "normal" 5850 would be good. I have two, and one does 350 (XFX) and the other 375 (Sapphire). Sapphire or MSI are probably the best brands to go with. If you have to go with the Radeon 6000 series cards, I would try to find a 6950, but idk if you could find one of these within your budget.

5850's are very good. I recently got a cheap powercolor one, it performs very well at 385mhash. The only downside to my exact version is that the voltage is hardware set to above stock, so I need to hardwaremod it to hit 400mhash, which I think it very likely would. They might use a bit much power tho (in all, not per mhash). If you want to go one step up I would recommend giving the money for 5970's. Yes they are expensive and hot, but also give you great value for the money considering the use of only one PCI-e slot.

To comparison to the 5850, my 6950 (almost two thirds more expensive than the 5850!) is doing 367mhash at a reasonable low overclock, but heat is a problem.

There are people who would pay a LOT of bitcoins to know how to get 7 gh/s out of a CPU, let alone GPU.

if you don't mind, i'd like that CPU. It's sounds very profitable considering he's probably running less than 1kw.

5830 are your best bet but they are always out of stock.
6950 seem good compared to rest of 6000 series for price because of shader unlock which basically makes it a 6970. Also, slightly increased power efficiency means the non profit point is slightly after.

You'll get more Mhps out of a 5870, so if you find a good deal on one, that might be better. I've had better luck finding deals on 5850s though. A 5850 will do 350-400 Mhps, and a 5870 will do 400-450 Mhps. But I think it's easier to get a 5850 to 400 than it is to get a 5870 to 450 (saying that just based on my general impression from reading around in the forum). Another consideration is efficiency if you care about that. 5850s are known for their efficiency, only pulling about 150 watts. But if you are just getting one card, that isn't much of a factor.

Done some calculations and buying a ATI Radeon 5850 is more profitable over a year due to electric cost. I based it on that it would get 350 mh/s 24/7 a day and compared it to a ATI radeon HD 5870 generating 400 mh/s.

Nice. teukon has a 2x5850 rig that does 722 Mhps and only pulls about 300w from the wall for the whole rig. He undervolted the cards and has a very efficient PSU though. Not sure how much the cards are puling, but it must be less than 125w at least.

I'll throw my $.02 in. I like my R6950 FROZR from MSI. My main PC is also my mining rig, so noise and heat are of interest to me. The cards with nicer coolers like the MSI FROZR and the ASUS Direct CU are quiet and cooler than the 5830 I had.
