Ubuntu won't boot with video card in topmost pcie 1x slot

I finally got my PCI-e 1x-16x extender cables in, and I am anxious to max out my motherboards with gpus.  Here is my setup:

Slot 0 (PCI-e 1x) -> 5830
Slot 1 (PCI-e 16x) -> 5990
Slot 2 (PCI-e 1x) -> 5830
Slot 3 (PCI-e 16x) -> 5830
Slot 4 (PCI-e 16x) -> 5830

The system boot fine when I only had the 16x slots used or when I have the 16x and the slot 2 1x slot used.  When I plug in the 5830 in slot 0, it hangs up in boot.  I can open up recovery mode, and with aticonfig can see all the cards, the 6990 showing up first and default.  Could the slot 0 card be trying to usurp the default position, and that cause the issue?  Any ideas why this one slot would give me a problem?

Have you tried delete your Xorg.conf file? Hit ctrl+alt+f1 when it boots to a blank screen and you should be able to access the CLI.

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
aticonfig --adapter=all --initial
sudo reboot

This should allow Ubuntu to re-detect all your cards and reinitialize them.

Last time I saw this, it was a bad pci extender cable. Try swapping the cables - see if the problem follows the cable.
