Because a new supporters of the ICO project is not enough, so if some free Airdrop tokens, can make more and more people pay attention to the ICO project, then you can get more supporters.

Yeah it's usually super convenient for everyone involved. Though I've read that some new airdrops failed to pay and were scams, which sucks.

My own argument is you need some small holders to get the trade going to get approved on coinmarketcap and small exchnages.
Valid argument?

New coins get more exposure by doing airdrops as you can see how quick their social media accounts get thousands of followers and everyone doing retweets and promotion for them .

Airdrops are used to attract investors. In these way, more people will know them because they are giving away free tokens and who does not want free tokens? Despite of not being sure whether these "free tokens" have value, people still entertain them anyway because what's the risk? Only the eth address are given and you just have to wait for your reward. Most of the time airdrops have no value. They are too small to be considered. Not all people realize that they are just being used as tools for fame.

I think most of the new projects offer airdrop as a marketing strategy, this way they promote and announce their project to crypto community, also they are able to get thousands of people in their telegram and social media channels that gives investors more confidence about the project.

I think that airdrop is a waste of time because when we register airdrop the results we can not make withdrawal that's weird?

the purpose of the airdrop itself is fair ditribution,
if you were here when Bitcoin did the same thing like what other project did a few days/weeks/months ago,you will understand what is their attention.
with the airdrop,
the coin will be distributed fairly to every members, and also it could be said as an Advertisement for the project itself.
the majority people do not really care about the project when they are asking you to pay to get it.
but,if you get it for free you will spare some of your attention to that project.
why ? because it has a potential for you to get money,on the other hand for the project itself.
it gets a poppularity from the members who has their coin.

win to win solution for members and for the project itself.

Withdrawal of airdrop coin is not instant. It is usually after the end of ico and tokens have been distributed. Although some ico are not genuine, even after giving the token , they would still lock you out from withdrawing for certain time.

In my opinion is to encourage investors and to generate a slight manipulation of the market, buying and selling what you have acquired, thus generating a volatility and a possible growth of the currency.

I think it is more necessary for PR of the project and it is favorable, the project does not spend the money, and pays people tokens for certain actions.

It depends from a project. If a project is confident they'll be sold at once let's say in 1 week, days, or even just hours, they don't need to do any airdrop or bounty campaigns. They may have focused their budget through Facebook ads so they more likely reached enough possible investors to not anymore mind of allocating to airdrops or bounties but I give credits to projects who were active in Facebook and Google (or Youtube) ads but still give back by means of airdrops or bounties.

I have seen some good comments here as well:

AirDrop is actually done for coins deployment, so all cryptocurrency users can know which coins are being released in a market. So investors who intend to buy the coins easily find it.

To build a strong community that will help your project to promote it, it is easily to get their attention of the investor specially when you have airdrop but it depends on the project if they want to join or not, airdrop is one of the best marketing strategies to grow your community.

Why new projects do airdrops? In my personal opinion that's the easiest and fastest way for an ICO to get more supporters. Its a simplest form of marketing as participants get a share of the token just by doing a little effort required by a company. I think of airdrop as the cheapest way to market a certain project as you don't need to pay for an actual money first but the token of the project.

Recently I have begin to question the reason why projects do airdrops at all, most airdropped tokens are less than 15-20 USD in value, I mean like why would I want to have a portfolio of 100 tokens worth $15.

The pieces in play are too much, when I would rather easily sell them and hold 3 really great projects long term.

Teams think spreading their tokens around helps them increase trading volumes & subsequently prices but I believe when they spread very few of this tokens its counter productive.

An example of a good airdrop is POLY they gave out 250 tokens each all worth btw 0.7 - 1.4 USD per token on both the lows and highs. I know some people who are happy to hold this token as they believe the project will  be successful.

My conclusion is this: teams need to really dig deep into their strategy when doing airdrops, because when done wrongly, it can have a bad effect on the token value.
Which is bad for investors
