Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's
computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be
reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

According to coinmarketcap data there are around 900 coins which work on their own blockchain and 600 tokens supported on other blockchain. There are many ICO currently running which would be added to coinmarketcap in the future. Btc being the first digital currency to solve the double spending problem remains in the top crypto. Blockchain technology was invented along with the btc, by keeping these in mind there would be very few currencies which would replace them.

Cryptocurrencies: 1564 / Markets: 9414 Market Cap: $313,825,388,553 / 24h Vol: $10,983,170,968 / BTC Dominance: 42.9% via https://coinmarketcap.comThere has been thousands of cryptocurrency created, but only a couple dozen will really be here for the long term. The biggest argument in the space right now is will/what will overtake Bitcoin. In my opinion the future cryptocurrency to rule them all has not been developed yet. There are great platforms and technology in the space, but I think sharding and some technology that is in development will really outlast it all. I also believe Bitcoin will be around forever and be the 'gold' of the space.

maybe ripple or ether) but this is my subjective opinion) What makes you think is ripple? XRP does not work based on the POWs as blockchain of bitcoin. Many people think it is not a blockchain. XRP is a centralized network controlled by banks and ripple labs.

XRP is a centralized network controlled by banks and ripple labs. With the rise of Bitcoin, the world has begun to realize the existence of cryptocurrency. Because bitcoin usage rates are at the top, companies are beginning to accept bitcoin deliveries and payments. Other currencies, such as Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, and other blockchain-based digital currencies have also attracted the interest of investors and traders.

There are so many digital currencies in the world right now and it's hard to pinpoint the amount of cryptocurrencies because even new ones keep popping up everyday. But time will seperate the goat from the sheep.

From what I've learned so far, there are three types. PoW coins, PoS coins and DAG coins. I don't think any of them will replace Bitcoin, since it is the most decentralized, and it gets better every day. However, I can see cryptocurrencies having success as complementary currencies, since they bring innovation that are very hard to be implemented in Bitcoin itself.
