  • the Lightning network was deployed onto the Bitcoin main net after months of test net trials[1]
  • SegWit was introduced.[2]

Both software innovations have allowed Bitcoin to sustainably scale and compete with its competitors.[3]

Do you think these solutions will eliminate altcoins? or we really need altcoins?

Maybe it can really kill a lot of projects that offer a fast and powerful network that does not offer anything, of course such projects can be compromised. I think that such projects are not small.

I think that lightning and segwit could be implemented to other cryptocurrencies but bitcoin. If a crypto has a good software team and it's not just a copy of another popular coin I don't see there is a problem. Everything is open source and can be used for any purpose.
So my opinion is that changes in bitcoin won't stop the existing alts or new coins to be created.
New good ideas can be only positive to the crypto world.

Saying segwit & lightning network will kill altcoins is missing the whole point of the blockchain.
Crypto is not just about exchange of value, it is more, there are smart contracts executing commands to solve real life problems and besides the issue of high transaction prices still plague bitcoin

By 2017 I've heard that Lightning Network (LN) can damage the ecosystem of cryptocurrency (bitcoin and altcoin). Whether true or not?... I myself still searching for his truth so this does not cause any negative speculation.
