do you have to be actually running an instance of the bitcoin client.. eg i run my non secure day to day wallet on my lappy, if i hop on a plane and someone sends me a bitcoin.. whats happens?

You can see your bitcoin the next time you open the client. When a person sends you a bitcoin, it's actually sending the transaction to the bitcoin network. The network will validate the transaction and deposit the money on your address. It doesn't matter if you are online or not.

I was wondering that too! and like they said, you'll get it when you open it back up. I think sometimes it takes a bit though, especially if the wallet needs to sync because youve been away for a while or some other reason.

It's already in your wallet once they send it, once you sync up boom it's there.
