I've started this thread on the beginner's board, as I've seen several posts by new members saying how difficult they were finding it to contribute from a smartphone. This made me realise why some of the new members posts were of such low quality. I use a smartphone to read some of the threads, but I don't try to post anything via the phone, as I find it too difficult.

If you want to be a long term contributor in the Bitcoin Talk forum, I think it is worth investing in something with a larger screen and a keybord. It doesn't have to be much, I started using a basic Chromebook when I was travelling around, and free WiFi might be cheaper than a data plan on a mobile. If you haven't got access to WiFi, then tethering via your phone seems work well, but then you have to watch the data usage. Even cheaper would be an old netbook or notebook. The quality of your posting affects your ranking and your reputation here, and I find it almost impossible to contribute to the forum with just a smartphone.

I've seen several posts by new members saying how difficult they were finding it to contribute from a smartphone.

I can definitely relate to this.  I was without a home landline for several weeks due to a change of address and an incompetent home-phone provider (my ISP itself is awesome, but they couldn't do anything until I had the landline hooked up), so I tried to rely on posting with a smartphone.  Huge mistake.  Attempting to copy and paste segments of text for quotes on a touchscreen is an absolute ball-ache, as is pressing the 'quote' button and then trying to delete all the irrelevant parts of the rest of the post.  And don't even get me started on trying to use any BB code for links when you have to press three different places just to get a '[' bracket.  The 'insert hyperlink' button isn't much better since it always thinks you've pressed one of the buttons next to it.

I just about made it through the experience without putting my phone through a window, but I doubt most people would have put that much effort in just to make a few decent quality posts.  It was so infuriating that, after just a few days, I resorted to getting a temporary 4G USB SIM-card dongle for my PC and likely paying over the odds for a paltry 2 GB of mobile data.  But it was worth it for just being able to use a mouse and keyboard again.  Thankfully I'm back on my normal internet now.

Smartphones are great for looking stuff up and having quick informal chats, but they are in no way suitable for serious discussions and debates where individual points need to be addressed and countered, arguments need to be evidenced with links and where your post needs to make sense and not have any auto-correct screwing it up.  I wouldn't even cope on a large touchscreen tablet.  It's pretty much keyboard or bust.

Honestly I prefer using my desktop PC as well. There is an app in google app store for android which was made by one member here but as it was not updated it doesn't work now. Thing is that it is hard to build an app since you will have to grab information from real html file and then chnage it's look  and it takes much time to do this. Then if something is updated you need to go through and fix issues. So yeah it is a lot of work and as doomMAD said it is hard to copy/paste text even if you had an app that is convinient with the UI.

Yup it is hard to post using a smartphone because the screen is too small. I used to zoom in the screen so i can see what i am typing or reading. And most of the time it takes time to post due to a slow internet connection since i only have mobile data. But what's good about it is that i can read and post anytime and wherever i want because smartphones are very handy. Yes, its much easier to use laptop when it comes to typing or reading. Its also much easier to copy and post links as support to what i have posted, but I seldom use mine because i don't have a wifi or internet connection. Also, i cant use laptop anytime i want because its heavy, so i prefer to use smartphones even if its harder to use and a little time consuming.

It really is difficult, but not impossible. We just have to zoom in and out like a hundred times to read a long post. LOL

Unfortunately I think we just have to deal with it. The "new" or I guess the supposedly "version 2" forum software, "beta.bitcointalk.org" has been beta for years but now the link is pretty much dead. Looks like they've discontinued it.

Yup, it's quite hard most especially if you have a blurry vision. You can't check flawlessly whether all of your grammar or words are right or not because of smartphones small screens. But I believe, as long as you want to contribute to the forum, no matter what you use or how many drawbacks are there, it won't affect the quality of your post if you really aim quality.

Posted using smart phone. Hope I didn't misspelled some words, really need to buy glasses!  Cheesy , Special thanks to smartphone feature "ZOOM"...

Have you tried tethering. I use it when the WiFi is spotty or non-existent.

There is an Android app called Forum Talker, that works just for reading Bitcointalk (and any other forums). I didn't manage to reply from this app, probably because of login recaptcha, however for reading works good.

I find no problem when access forum on Chrome Android, if text are too small, you can use your finger to zoom in. And chrome will sync with your data at PC, so you can easy to access forums or other site

Yes, it is troublesome to use this forum in an app. The admin should get an app designed for this purpose so that we can use it on forum as well.

yup it's bit difficult to make some post (although not so difficult if we really try). in my case, 70% of my activity is learning by reading in this forum (learn anything about crypto, especially about correlation between ICO and bounty, and joined 1 bounty campaign as well  Wink Grin ),  30% writing. if i wanna make a thread or ask something, i write on smartphone memo, then if there is a time to open my pc then i re-write my memo into the thread on my PC. and yepp, with tethering from my phone

Hey jetcash, nice to see you here again mate, seems you help out alot here. I do contribute with mobile most time, an Xperia phone though, and with a big screen. The only problem i can say that mobile has is the constricted texts, i strain my eyes more.

Also, most times, jm on the go, so mobile is really the only option ive got when in the bus or cab

Since my day one in bitcointalk forum till now, I have been using my smartphone to login and it really perfect in some aspect, which I really enjoy because it very ease to access and faster when there is network issue compare to desktop PC. The only problem with accessing this forum with smartphone is the letters, they are too small and it gives eye stress sometimes when I want to type.
