50BTC seems to have had its account servers hacked

and Eclipsemc pools show up as dead in my MinePeon status screen.

Are these incidents independent, or are they part of a broader attack on the Bitcoin network. Additionally, can someone recommend to me a mining pool that is robust enough to withstand such an attack?

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.
