Guys, I am just wondering what could be the consequence from both legal and moral side. Any solution ahead.

I think such kind of research work mirrors the dark side of this golden world and it really needs to be brought to light. Such kind of discussions are important to be put forward. Legality of such kind of things, if you ask me, I would say an action needs to be taken!

And on moral grounds, of course this is something society n people really disapprove of. It's a disgrace!

This is what they conclude their report with:
“We thus believe that future blockchain designs must proactively cope with objectionable content. Peers can, e.g., filter incoming transactions or revert content holding transactions... but this must be scalable and transparent.”
(Source:

I think something of this kind really needs to be done and then only things will change. And trust me it is not the first time such kind of issue has come up!!

I do not know why this is suddenly in the news.
Look at the thread below (dated 2013)
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=191039.0

It has been 5 years since this happened. Pretty sure nothing is going to change, just because this made the news again.

Wow I don't know about that thread but this is the twitter account that became the source of that thread.
https://twitter.com/travisgoodspeed/status/328906226572345344

The article says that there's a sexual image attached to bitcoin transaction. How can that possible to happen? There's no proof with that claim and there's no image that article or those researchers showed.

I don't see anything wrong with that. It is not the fault of the blockchain. If someone wants to send or receive the photo, he will find a way to do it. It seems to me that the opponents of cryptocurrencies using any excuse to discredit the system of cryptocurrency.

I bumped into this question in the ZenCash thread. This issue is not unique to Bitcoin. It affects all blockchains.

My answer is that this issue isn't unique to cryptocurrencies. Steganography can be applied to many forms of data storage and communication. Be it stock market prices, radio waves, favicons and web ads... I'm sure it's possible to encode illegal data with sesame seeds on hamburgers.

If this issue is being used to bring down cryptocurrency, it opens a Pandora's Box for every possible carrier and unwilling recipient of steganography.

Nothing will happen. We can have many cases like this one and still, nothing will happen, but if one case gets the media attention that could influence something on someone.

Don't you know that it is likely called as a FUD creation because out of nowhere it came up suddenly were it is too obvious that it happened already before. Seems like this is their first time to know this kind of thing, were it's already been around before but they did not really put too much attention to it since this is a criminal act and they leave it to the police works.

We do have parents that should guide our kids in doing this, so if we allowed our children then it is our responsible, but for me I will not teach my children here until he reaches his legal age,  as I wanted him to take care of his study first before anything else.

When it comes to liabilty, the burden may fall on those who attempt to send and receive the picture. They will be the ones who are at fault. I’m not sure how they will be prosecuted, however its a wrongful act that should be punished. The use of blockchain in itself is not wrong. Same goes with how pornography and other illegal matter is being used through the internet, however it’s not illegal to solely use the internet which does not concern with anything that is not illegal.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/german-researchers-child-abuse-content-found-on-bitcoin-blockchain-users-must-be-protected

The reason on why bitcoin is currently banned in some countries in Asia due to its nature being decentralized. People would utilize the the dark web in order to gain access to covert data, things, or videos. Since the government has scarce resources to track down illegal transactions happening under the dark web, countries would just ban the utilization of bitcoin as a 'band-aid' solution to this ongoing conundrum. But if the government found a way to decipher information in the block chain, this may imply that bitcoin may be regulated soon.
