Free cryptocurrency tokens fell from balloons in Mainframe's first "airdrop" in Hong Kong on March 20, 2018. It was part of a giveaway in which the secure messaging company will release a total $1 million worth of crypto coins.

HONG KONG—The crowd, most of them wearing masks, squinted up at the raft of multicolored balloons floating near the ceiling, trying to make out the silhouettes of the coins suspended inside each one. And then, against the backdrop of Hong Kong’s neon-rainbow skyline, they raised their hands as the countdown began: “10, 9, 8…FREEDOM!” they screamed, amid a shower of confetti. Suddenly, the loud popping of a fireworks show filled the room as the balloons exploded, and the crypto tokens they contained fell into eager hands.

The spectacle Tuesday evening, held at the inaugural Token 2049 conference, released tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of free digital money. But it was just the first of 25 events in which a Utah-based secure messaging startup called Mainframe will give away about $1 million of its cryptocurrency—by literally making it rain crypto coins upon the heads of enthusiasts.

That’s amazing new way of taking “airdrops” in a much real and literally astonishing. This would be a new way and making a news locally in which country it would be held. The sad part is, I can’t be part of it when it’s not online but a present on the spot. This is a different strategy, but a good way to make a name of a company “mainframe”. Good job.

What a way to market a project! I am hoping they can come to my place so we can also take hold of those tokens from Mainframe. This can be the way to spread the good news about digital currencies...give more to gain more. Anyway, since it is digital the cost of such a giveaway can be so minimal. Thanks Mainframe for such a move. Nothing can stop the cryptocurrency movement because governments will realize they can lost potential tax revenues if they choose to ban rather than regulate.

"The capital will fund Mainframe’s development of a messaging service that is not only encrypted, but masks the trajectory of messages using “dark routing,” in order to be “censorship-resistant and surveillance-resistant.” Such technology, the company argues, will better preserve users’ freedom." This is going to get a lot of resistance from governments all over the world and these guys are worried about the SEC declaring it as a security.  Roll Eyes

" It’s unclear if Mainframe’s literal “air drop” would pass legal muster in the United States, or if regulators in other countries will agree the gimmick does not violate securities laws. "

The government will find a way to stop this, they always do. ^grrrrr^

A cynic might ask them why they're dropping a million dollars plus costs of the stunt... And then probably ask for further rounds of investment later on. One might say the funding could have gone towards significant development... Or to accelerate product. But that's probably because these tokens aren't actually valued at anything other than what Mainframe thinks they are...

What's that again about nothing really coming free?

I suppose this really is the era of crypto corporatism. We are well and truly here.

That's one literal way of replicating an 'airdrop'. It must have been an exciting even which made use of balloons and fireworks. It's an attractive way of bringing attention towards cryptocurrency also it would engage more users. It's amazing how advanced technology is which allows the physical distribution of digital money through a creative way. This is truly an excellent marketing strategy ployed by Mainframe. Of course, there's no free lunch and the free money wasn't given away for no reason at all. This would be at the advantage as well of Mainframe.

I never liked that kind of show. I think they are based on the basest instincts of people. I don't like watching people push in the battle for money. I have been a contempt footage of black Friday when people fight over discounts. I will never take part in such a project. Human dignity is important to me.

These marketing choices are interesting and always have repercussions. They are effective when used in a public that already knows enough about cryptocurrency.

But I realize that the general public still has a lot of difficulties in understanding the concept of the public ledger and the idea that you do not have a certain token or coin in a physical sense, but, rather, an access to move it in the public ledger. And trying to transform the blockchain's idea into something physical, palpable, over time may further hinder the understanding of how revolutionary this idea is.

The blockchain is something different from the fiat currency. Not just because it's virtual, but because it's a decentralized public ledger. That is, it only exists there and nowhere else.
