HOW CLOSE TO 163 usd will the hub be? I see it is a usb 2 and I like it. I also know most of these are hard on a psu as most newer psu's only do 25A at 5volt.

I'd also like to note that the usb hub price will be driven by the market and may go up on the next sale. I had intended to sell for a bit more but I am price matching here. Once the market sets a price for the hubs, I don't expect that price to move like the usb sticks.

Is this powered by 12v or 5v? This is important. Most modern power supplies don't supply any more than 80-120 watts on 5v, even crazy powerful ones like corsair ax1200 or lepa 1600. If this is powered by 12v, that is much better, but still limiting because the hubs requires an atx24 pin connector instead of one of the much more available molex/sata/pci-e connectors.

USB is 5V almost certainly the unit isn't doing 100W+ 12V to 5V conversion so it is powered by the 5V pins on ATX connector.

I have 10 port hubs that come with a 12v @ 5 amp power brick, so I don't think it would be unheard of for such a large hub to downscale 12v to 5v. Being stuck at 5v input is a shame. Will need to buy multiple ATX power supplies instead of just a single one to run multiple hubs :/

I haven't had time to open one up yet to see what pins are being used, but just eyeballing it I don't see any transformers in line. I'm guessing it's using the 5v pins.

More likely to be direct DC regulators like this than transformers.

Damn, that is a shame. Why can't any USB hub manufacturer make a large hub that natively uses 12v, or has raw leads for dedicated 5v power supplies?

unless you find an older psu most quality modern psu's will run 40 of the 49 sticks.
I have a shitload of psu's on hand from my gpu mining days.
I will test all my psu's:
seasonic platinum 1000 watt seasonic platinum 760 watt seasonic gold 650 watt corsair gold 650 watt nxzt bronze 650 watt OCZ bronze 550 watt
I will test each one for a day at 40 sticks 45 sticks 49 sticks and let you all know what I get. This means more then a week of testing
I have an older psu it is 1000 watt can't remember the name but it is a 2008 model My guess is it will be the best of all.
I doubt that any of these psu's will like running 49 sticks 24/7 since most rated at 25 amp 5volt
crazy guy said he will ship to me today. I will test the cheap psu's first since most of us would want to use an under 100 dollar psu not a 100 dollar plus one.

I got 113 sticks on 1 pc. careful hub planning is needed. this would make things simple

It's very hard to find this kind of PSU nowdays (except hunting down a used one), so you're lucky if you have one like this. It should work great! 5*30 = 150 Watts (available) 49 ports *2.5 W = 122.5 Watts (required by 49 sticks) all PSUs that have 25A on the 5V ATX (<-- !!!) will give you 125 Wats while 49 sticks require 122.5 (tiny difference, relatively speaking), so you need a REALLY GOOD PSU. I have one that's been running 24/7 ever since I tested that 49 port hub from a British company (details somewhere on the USB hubs thread)

anyone know if there is an actual limit of usb devices per computer? could I run 4 of these hubs connected to just 1 pc?
127 devices per USB controller including the hub etc. is the limit. so i could only run 2 hubs per pc? no you can run 3 with around 39- 41 sticks each acutally pretty nice as it will get you around the issue that most modern psu's will want to run only 40 to 44 sticks. I got 113 sticks on 1 pc. careful hub planning is needed. this would make things simple Be careful USB also limits the number of chained decvices to 6 including the end device, any hubs, and the root hub (usb port on host). Most USB hubs > 8 ports are actually multiple hubs chained together.

Sometimes old junk turns out to be a treasure. The issue is that on modern PC the 5V rail really isn't used much. Today almost all PC convert 100% of the power from AC to 12VDC. Then whatever is needed on 5V and 3.3V rails is converted off the 12V rail. 99% of PC never use more than 10W on 5V rail so building massive 5V rails just means added cost for no benefit. One thing to check is the wire gauge on your PSU ATX harness. If it is really chip thin wires (the AWG should be stamped on the wire) it may not be able to handle a high current.

So can you find out if 3 of these will run on 1 PC? would be awesome! I am thinking 1 hub to 1 usb port, no daisy chaining these monsters:P

Like I said no USB hub discloses the internal configuration so it will need some trial and error. 2 or 3 is probably fine it each one is directly connect to the PC.

what gauge wire would suit? Like most PC enthusiasts, I have a ton of old hardware, including PSU's... in the basement, in the attic, in the closet, in the garage, under the bed... ALsO: I have an Antec EA-650 3 12V rails 22a,22a,24a I think, will that do it?

I know 18 gauge would be good. based on my gpu mining. maybe 20 gauge , but not in my house on my gear as I have 6 or 7 psus with 18 gauge. I think the antec will run 40 sticks not 49. Most new psu's will not do the 49 sticks. the rating is 125 watts on most and 49 sticks = 122.5 watts. for safe running you want 80%

Now I am glad that I kept my Antec True Power PS's.
I have been using a True-380 for some blades and it has a 5v 35a rail.
I have a new TP2-550EPS12v that has a 5v 40a rail. This was a backup ps that I had for a few gamer machines that I had. The receipt was still in the box. $79.99 from Frys Las Vegas Apr 11 2006. I always kept the paperwork and boxes in case of warranty returns.
Now they will both be put to use.

better or worse? I am thinking that the goal is lowest wattage with highest amperage? forgive my stupidity, not an electrician, slept through shop and physics classes and way too many years ago anyways
I assume the +5v 130W is what philipma1957 refers to saying ' most are 125W '

It is most wattage and amperage but ON THE 5V rail. Watts = Current * Voltage The nameplate you posted shows 5V rail is rated for 25A max. Watts = 25A * 5V Watts = 125W Your PSU is good for 125W on the 5V rail although you may want to back it off a little bit. 85% load would be 106W. It is very rare for a modern PSU to have more than 125W (25A) on the 5V rail simply because almost no application needs more than half that. Making a PSU have 250W on the 5V rail could be done it would just cost more for no benefit.

yeah the thermaltake smart 850 has 2 ratings for the secondaries 5 volts at 25 amps and 130 watts. only one of those are correct. since they represent different values. 5 at 25 amps = 125 watts and that does not = 130 watts. newer PSU's are 12 volt only and then 2 dc to dc converter transistor/chips one from 12 v to 3.3 v and one from 12 v to 5 v. the dc converter is more often then not rated at 25 amps. safe 24/7/365 is 80% or about 40 sticks.

Yes, I expect more next week. I HAVE A test bed setup. your package is due to me on monday. I will hookup 40 sticks to a 5 hub setup check the power use with a kill-a-watt. I will then hook the same 40 sticks up to the 49 port hub check watts use with about 7 psu's . I was doing some projections on this as a money earning space heater. I can fit this out of site behind my flat screen tv in my basement den. Always too cold in the winter (except last year due to gpu btc mining). I will set up 40 sticks on a low power pc with this hub. I may mine 13.33 at 200 watts. That would be about 1000 btu an hour 24k btu a day or 744,000 btu a month. That is 7.5 therms of gas heat a month or around 10 bucks of free heat. I may be able to mine at a difficulty of 2 bill and not be losing money due to the free heat which would work until April or May.

At canary that is a nice find.
I found 2 others for 20 bucks each, when I test the hub I will post if they work. I hate to tip everyone to a bad piece of gear. If I were to bet on your psu working or the ones I found I would bet yours works not mine. the seller sells a lot of surplus my success rate has been about 75% with his gear. Even if these 20 dollar ones work I have so many psu's.
I wonder if these use too much juice at the wall.

got mine today . having a few issues but 34 ports work fine. right now I am using a 225 usd sea sonic platinum 1000 watt psu. running 34 ports . I am pulling 117 watts at the wall . not surprised as 34 x 2.5 = 85 watts divide by 70 percent you get 121 watts. so my efficiency is in the 70's
near as I can figure my hub has 2 bad banks row 8- 14 and row 15-21 are powered but do not detect the hubs. 1 lone port does not work in bank 42-49
hard to tell why. one thing for sure it is a nice size for am sticks . you can use just 2 fans to cool it.
I will test more psu's as I would like to find the best one. for running 34 sticks.
it also may be that running this hub on a different pc will allow more then 34 sticks

I will test more psu's as I would like to find the best one. for running 34 sticks.
it also may be that running this hub on a different pc will allow more then 34 sticks
Is it powering the units and your controller is just not recognizing them? Try isolating the two banks in question and unplugging all other units.

got mine today . having a few issues but 34 ports work fine. right now I am using a 225 usd sea sonic platinum 1000 watt psu. running 34 ports . I am pulling 117 watts at the wall . not surprised as 34 x 2.5 = 85 watts divide by 70 percent you get 121 watts. so my efficiency is in the 70's

I got it to work on a different pc. right now I am running 44 sticks using a Nzxt psu a 650 watt model rated for 5 v 25 amp. I am also using the four pin 12 volt cable to run a pair of 12 volt fans. total power at the wall is 159 watts for 44 sticks and 2 fans. seems to be a decent piece of gear. but it may vary from pc to pc. I am going to run more tests and post later today and tommorow. On wed. thurs I get 2 surplus 20 dollar psu's.. if they work I will give links to buy them.

I decided to keep one with this batch for testing as well. I've got a few PSUs I'll be testing and will provide updates on what I find. I've got to say, I like your idea of stacking them with spacers and I look forward to seeing some of the rigs you guys build.

at bitterdog this is running off a hi end asus maximus mobo left over from all my gpu rigs. (it is a 1k pc) I have 3 pc's left from the 13 I ran gpu rigs with. two in the photo and one in another room. you can also see the 20 port hub to the left of the 49 port hub last set current bitminter mining the 20 hub plus the 49 port . I think I have it at 19 of 20 ports and 46 of 49 ports. 4 fans. the grand total power of 301 watts. I want to add a second 49 port to this rig if I can. I would be at about 450-460 watts and about 111 sticks

Nice setup btw Phil. Any good, old server PSU suggestions that have enough power on the 5v rail to run these? Makes me wish I'd kept some of my PSU's from the original AMD Athlon days when we needed the beefy 5v rails.

that stain is not what it looks like. LOL I found a great psu it arrives at my house on weds. http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/58-12860 use code afc909 get a 15% discount to under 14 bucks plus shipping! shipping is about 10 for 1. if you order 200 usd from them shipping is free. it has a 36 amp 5 volt rating should run a hub easy and they have more then 100 of them in stock. you can wait till wed when I test the one I get. or buy now tip jar below. 1Fo2K52Rz7LZw9fcF5BDdDBjfNaViQ8J3x This PSU looks very promising, and it helps that it's really cheap. Let us know how it goes.

Technically you need around 24.5 amps at 5v. That has 25 amps at 5v... However you need some wiggle room, I wouldn't trust that to run a full 49 miner setup.. PSU's are often overrated in what kinda of power they actually make.

Any that read 25 amp and 5 volt Should run 40 sticks after 40 it is a crap shoot. If you can wait until weds the low cost one from mcmelectronics.com comes to my house . I will post results. It would be about 14 plus 10 to ship. with code AFC909. I have used mcm since the 1990's they are okay. I built MCM's search engine, ha. Its funny to see websites you have worked on over the years pop up. Actually they recently left our company, but I worked on their search and navigation for years....

I got a Corsair AX760 that ran my hub for awhile with 49 erupters with no problem and now i am running it off of a Corsair CX600M No issues still. Running an average of 99.85% Accepted Shares.
Do keep in mind people that any kind of power flicker reaks havic on electronics. Spend the money and get a UPS(Battery Backup ex: APC).

DO YOU THINK I can get a third one to work on the same pc? be fun to try. Depends on how many you are running on each hub. You could always get another cheap controller like beaglebone black or raspberry pi, although I never had any luck with the latter. In fact I've got a defective RPi I'll throw in with the first order of 2 or more hub/ stick combos. Not sure what's wrong with the pi, it resets on me and I haven't had time to take a look at it yet. It may have a bad poly-fuse and easy to fix, or it may be a new doorstop, but who cares, it's free!

DO YOU THINK I can get a third one to work on the same pc? be fun to try. I think USB port limitations is 127 in Windows. yes i have read that as the limit which with my mobo using 1 port for mouse/keyboard 1 port for each of the 49 port hubs would be 127-4 = 123 sticks max. now I put in a 5 port usb pcie card in this pc and it claims i can run 127 ports on each of its 5 ports. right now It is running the 2x 49 port hubs. I would like to know a if the pcie card lets me get past the 127 port limit. this asus mobo has run 113 sticks and it said I exceed the port limit when I went to the 114th stick. I used a lot of hubs and no pcie usb2 card to get to the 113 which is the most sticks I ever run on a single machine. It would be very nice to get to 120 plus

Assuming the PCI-E card runs each port individually and doesn't have it built in as some cheap ass 5 port hub you should be able to run 127 USB devices/port, if it does has some built in cheap ass 5 port hub thing then you'll be limited to 126 devices between all 5 ports.

For those looking for a psu to run this hub Rosewill 350rv has +5V@35A and is dirt cheap. I should see my hub/miners and psu this afternoon, well report back on how it does. I almost fell out of my chair once I saw those. Is that your daytime job? Me too!

I got one of the two hubs running. All 48 on the running hub are hashing away. Thanks CrazyGuy! -herener That's an extremely tidy setup! By the way fellas, I didn't receive a batch of USB units today, it was all blades. I still hope to receive enough to pair with the available hubs within the next couple days. My apologies to those of you who had your hopes up.

Is there any consensus on a good Power supply to buy if you are running 40+ sticks.
I pulled an old 380w Raid Max out of my retired computer hardware box and have been running 43 block erupters and 2 usb fans. Seems like new ones on the low end are just not up to snuff. I realize it has something to do with the power going to the rails on new PSUs from reading through the forum, but my understanding of electronics is limited. Seems like a better idea to go digging through the garbage than online shopping at this point.

I've been using one of these for 2 months in my pc I built with no problems. I bought another one last week to use with my hub, it handles 49 miners no problems. Been running it few days now. It's a really nice and cheap option. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=151159152624Also, since these run on 5 volts, you need a psu that puts out enough amps at 5v. If your using an old 350 watt pc power supply I doubt it has enough amps at 5 volts. Theoretically you need at least 25 amps at 5 volts. But power supplies are always over rated and you don't want to run them at their max capacity. The one I listed above is 32 amps at 5 volts.

Thanks, that looks like a good deal overall, I will try one out, I plan to resell it eventually anyway. My old PSU says it is 29 amps on 5 volts. I tried running 47 miners and 2 fans at one point, but the power supply powered itself off when I went to run bfg miner. Since then I have left a few slots open and everything has been running well. I know I read that 25a on 5v thing here a few times, but I just now am understanding what that means and what to look for on the psu sticker, so I appreciate your reply.

The Rosewill 350rv +5V@35A psu I tried would run up to 40 sticks, produce heat, wire harness warm. I replaced it with a butt ugly Apevia AS520W, runs all 49 ports, fans on lowest speed blow room temp, no heat in harness. If you don't mind the blue leds and green sleeves, it's a great psu for the price.

Can someone relay how these things are supposed to be set up?
The only way I can get mine working is to plug the empty hub into my comp first then plugging in each BE stick one at a time.
If I have to reboot the comp for any reason or I get a power outage I have to unplug all the BE sticks and replug them all back in.
Seems like a hassle.

Read this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303640.msg3428585#msg3428585PSU must have 30A on 5V ATX Thanks for the feedback Regarding my PSU it is a 5V 30A unit and runs all 49 BE sticks just fine...once its up and running that is. Regarding the reboot problem I just found out that its a windoz thing...Linux seems to handle it just fine. So basically, if you want to reboot your comp without touching the hub in any way simply install Linux...easy fix.

I forgot to mention, price protection extends to all items I'm selling now. If I drop the price between the time you pay and delivery, you will be refunded the difference. This means that all buyers that paid .35 BTC for a hub this weekend will be receiving a .05 BTC refund tonight.

You might have to put at least one stick into it for the PSU to sense the load.
Switching power supplies simply will not work without some kind of load attached.

its my understanding you can swap the top panel with the bottom one... and make it whatever color you want...
if you look at the blue ones.... the bottom is red....
and on the red ones.... the bottom is blue

Thanks Xzempt for your help, and for not saying what you were undoubtedly thinking What if I told you the top and bottom board are interchangeable? Take the red hub… Or the blue hub… The choice is yours. Let me know if you have a preference.
