Better be more careful next time. Leaving your wallet unprotected is like... well, leaving your real life wallet unattended in public. Somebody's gonna steal it.

I think as bitcoin usage increases, this is going to be a huge problem. If computer-savvy users can get ripped off, how are the typical mom & pop ever going to manage?

online wallets. The current official client is way to beta and uncomfortable for average users. it doesn't even explain what the wallet.dat is nor does it tell the user that such a file exists.

Password encrypted wallet maybe? Something for the next version of the client?

i honestly don't know, i downloaded sometime in the past. I know it's a trojan because he opened up a chat thing between me and him on my computer after he stole everything :/

So how come nobody is improving the client?  It's open source and there seems to be plenty of interest.  I'm surprised that we're not seeing a continual evolution of the software on a regular basis like we do with other popular open source projects.

It's simple: we lack actual coders. We have plenty of "developers", but nobody seems to actually want to code anything.

This is why I use an online wallet rather than the official bitcoin client. I'm not saying online wallets are any safer - but they are at least slightly safer. I can't believe that the official bitcoin client STILL does not support encryption! Yes, I know it is available in some beta build but really - shouldn't this be priority number one over anything else? The whole bitcoin thing blew up 2 months ago and still nada! As Maged pointed out - the lack of coders is probably the result of this. I'm just shocked - all this interest in Bitcoin and the client hardly gets updated with fixes or improvements?! Where are you coders hiding?
