https://blockchain.info/address/16rCmCmbuWDhPjWTrpQGaU3EPdZF7MTdUk

This is the infamous "MtGox address" that people have been monitoring to guess how much the trustee was selling. As you can see, the last "sale" or at least the last withdraw from that address was a 3000 BTC transaction a couple of days ago:

https://blockchain.info/tx/10e9472239c7ce6ca70de831a570c03254f61c9e3f463e2a0c6b28d0f63b8aae

But as you can also see, there are a bunch of smaller transactions. This month, I've counted 28 transactions which added small amounts each. Why? who is adding coins in there? shouldn't this address become eventually emptied after the idiots managing this disaster sell to give the money back to creditors? (which is stupid since creditors should be getting their bitcoins back, not sold and in fiat)

Anyway, why these transactions?

I'm not entirely sure as well, and even some of the addresses in the bitcoin rich list are receiving chunks of dust inputs in their wallet. One way to think about this is that some users want to be a part of history, or wants their addresses to get connected to a certain one--in this case, controversial since it's a Mt. Gox address-which, the reason or motive is clearly unknown. No one can block inputs at a certain address so these 'trolls' or whoever they are would just keep on placing dust inputs into these famed addresses.

My first instinct was the same as dothebeats, probably people just wanting to send them money for one reason or another, either they're happy with what they're doing or they just want to be connected in some way. You can never really delve too deep in to the motives of people on the internet.

I would understand "being party of history" if you are donating to satoshi's genesis address for instance, but for me it doesn't much sense to donate to an address controlled by the japanese government now (as far as I know). Im not sure what will happen to the remainders of the funds once all creditors + karpeles and co are paid back. Will the japanese government hold it or they will sell it in an auction (or even worse, dump it in the market)

And the amounts don't make much sense as well. They are too big for it to be symbolic amounts "to be part of history". There are no logical reasons to donate to that address. I suspect someone involved in the whole thing is adding money on there for some reason.

the only reason that i have seen people send dust to these famous addresses is the case to advertise something. but since there is no message here i am not sure this is the case.
but a while ago when you opened these addresses on blockchain.info there used to be a little message on top of them containing a small string. i have seen people advertise their website, beg for money, advertise Ponzi double the coins in 24 hours,... this way.
blockchain.info recently removed this from their platform. maybe there are still some scripts out there that are doing this type of spamvertising because the spammer is not aware of this change or maybe there are other explorers that has this option.

https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/4707/what-method-does-my-wallet-use-to-encode-messages-in-the-blockchain/4709#4709

example of such messages:

https://blockchain.info/Resources/faq/public_notes1.png

edit: i actually found an article explaining how to increase page rank using this method (obviously this is obsolete now)

None of these transactions going to the MtGox address are advertising anything that I can see... so we must rule that option out too.

We must rule out symbolic transations too because some of them are huge transactions. For instance:

20,000 BTC transaction
https://blockchain.info/tx/d52c336a6d0085875761ad8495ffdffad2ca6d6d4eac10ec3f73f2cc81d4c1a3

10,000 BTC
https://blockchain.info/tx/9a84e010dda7131ba45e311092c734e1448fbf1e158e9bf10804d1d9422b78b0

10,000 BTC
https://blockchain.info/tx/dc611c580cb672cdb2f9dedf791c1e932444530b09d602d0472d9533bf26edcc

10,000 BTC
https://blockchain.info/tx/2c578b05333fb680568b660f5d440589b21706e25db9a8004d1fc1a62db1d1eb

10,000 BTC
https://blockchain.info/tx/df3971836f626746a0c97795b76c9a0295a02e7d1a2db659485d59fb5e6fe3b2

10,000 BTC
https://blockchain.info/tx/90336ff862bbc22d182eb8ae8f6a86620288d2ac8b05a902d2378e5d38a12f34

Even smaller ones like this one of 1 BTC are too much for a symbolic transaction:

https://blockchain.info/tx/f6904a3f61c5bc2c584f18db1eb7dec2a04946e41c7581f624fe5fd04b569154

So yeah.. who the hell is funding that address and why?

Might be somebody who is really pissed or bored and is sending dust to that address.
Happened with the silk road seized coins address also:
https://blockchain.info/address/1F1tAaz5x1HUXrCNLbtMDqcw6o5GNn4xqX?offset=0&filter=0

Basically they send 1$ worth of coins hoping it will cost MtGox 10$ to move the coins.
But with the empty mempool it makes no sense nowadays.

It's nothing new, all the addresses in the top richest are receiving this ....treatment.

Look at the other posts above... there are a bunch of transactions of 10,000 BTC which are recent, a 20,000BTC one, some 1 BTC ones, and some worth around $100 bucks which is too much to annoy anyone, specially now that the mempool is empty.

Hell, even these $10 worth transactions could be moved easily, they aren't doing nothing but making whoever controls the MtGox address now even richer... doesn't make sense to me.

We don't know all the circumstances. Perhaps the exchange has small debtors and they return the coins to the accounts of the exchange. I see no other explanation. To repay the exchange can't pretend to like you because statements of claim in court may be filed only in the official currency. I'm actually curious to know how they determine damage.

Yeah no. This is a sort of a bluff that is going on here. US lawyers have definitely got something to do with this. I know I'm going to sound extremely crazy and wild but it's possible. People now have come to know about this address and the trustee knows that people are going to monitor him, he definitely is up to something else. It's only time that will help figuring out what exactly is going on. I didn't read much on this topic but I don't see why this is not possible.

My reply was exactly for the part I've quoted in my answer, and only about the small transactions.
And there are plenty of those

As for the other question....
How do we know this address belongs to MtGox?
http://coindata.info/mtgox.php

It certainly isn't mentioned here, there are no google search result for it with MtGox and on reddit people claim it's actually Bittrex....

Even it would be me and you, because it's a bit difficult to learn who it is in Blockchain. But,if we think logically, it might be himself, so nobody is able to follow his track in Blockchain.
It's kind of difficult to answer the question due to the privacy option of Blockchain, maybe he got his funds through the help of exchange by trading and maybe from other exchanges he hacked.

you don't see it because these messages were not actually stored on the bitcoin blockchain but inside blockchain.info's database and since their database grew too big recently they removed this feature and all the messages with it.

an script that was written before to spam the famous addresses using blockchain.info api doesn't know this yet.

There is a FOMO brewing...

Great question, if you like mysteries. But there are actually so many types of wallet addresses like this, such as Satoshi's supposed addresses, which have not seen spends for more than 3, almost 4 or 5 years in some cases.

People keep sending transactions, perhaps as a form of tipping, perhaps just random trolling from big whales, perhaps others try to mask their trails and make it more difficult to track them down. Or, some use it to send messages, with the small pieces of random hellos encoded in the blockchain.

Well im not exactly sure how that is the address that belongs to Mt.Gox, but it's pointed out by several OG's in twitter that that is indeed the address from Mt.Gox:

It's also all over reddit. I know reddit is a joke but someone should have pointed out at this information being false already. I think this is the real deal and these coins are from Mt.Gox, so we have someone funding this address for some unknown reason. I haven't heard any convincing arguments as to why that money is moving in yet.
