I've done some research and checking cryptocompare, but the numbers don't seem to make it worth mining. Is there a low cost GPU (less than $400), that can make enough to pay for itself in a year?
Any resources for which altcoins to mine, software, pools and setup would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

Thanks DustSam15 for the information. Wow, that was a very thorough review of the 1050ti. The site blockoperations.com suggested starting with Ethereum, but that was written over a year ago. Would you suggest that or starting with Monero or Zcash instead?

Thanks again for the reference info!

There is another excellent resource called https://www.cryptunit.com/ where you can look at some of the smaller cryptonote altcoins some of which you can make a decent income with compared to more mainstream mining.

To make full use of cryptunit, try looking at http://monerobenchmarks.info/ which will give you a rough idea of what kind of performance you can expect from the hardware you settle on.

Personally I agree fully with the 1050ti recommendation and I run several rigs of them and they're a lot easier to manage than my higher end rigs.

Another card worth mentioning though is the 2/4Gb RX550 it's generally priced a bit lower than the 1050ti and as a stock card doesn't do very well. However, using the oneclick Polaris bios editor and flashing them will turn them into really nifty little cards spitting out 500 h/s easily on cryptonote @35W or 11Mh/s @50W on Ethereum. There are several great threads on easy bios modding here on the forum.

You should invest some more than 400 dollars mate. If i were you i'd go for a 1080TI, anything else is just waste. You want to go big or go home. Otherwise you could just buy the coin and hope for the best. If you build a good base, you can build on that when you expand  Smiley

My vote also goes to the 1050ti.

Some people in our local cryptomining scene have begun building huge farms with 1050tis only. Its really a good option right now considering that other GPU prices are bloated. My only worry is that new and upcoming GPUs may render this inefficient before they reach ROI.

I think 1060 or 570 is quite good. They are more powerful.

It looks like a lot of manufactures have their own 1050Ti. I found the EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 0 Ti FTW GAMING Graphics Card - 4 GB GDDR5 - 128-bit - 1379 MHz for $189. Some of the other ones I found were over $300. Will this EVGA work as well as some of the other 1050Ti's?

I think you should wait about 1-2 month. If trend will be the same - the GPU prices will be lower, maybe even like on last November.

Radeon RX 580(Average price in USD over last 18 months)

If you need gpu rig right now, 1050ti or RX560/RX550 - the best choice.

1080ti. It will keep up with difficulty adjustments and can be sold as a gaming card if something goes wrong.

depends on the crypto you want to mine.

If you want ETH then chose AMD. Nvidia is good for Zcash

just to compare:

RX 560 can do 16Mh/s. My GTX 1060 6gb (with a low tier hynix mem) is doing 18,5mh/s . Some 1060's will do even 24mh/s if you happen to get a good samsung mem.

RX 580's 8gb will do 32mh/s all the way. That's 1070ti ground on Nvidia side.

1050ti will do just 14mh/s at it's best (depends on silicon lottery though)

entry level? i would go to RX 560 / RX 550 or 1050ti, only considering price.

BTC no more than 6k by end of 2019. ETH no more than 300$ by end 2019. Huge market manipulation, huge amount of scammers and hypers.

Yes if you are looking at nvidia cards you wont want to mine eth, rather zec, go with the amd card if you want to mine eth.  Roi time is speculative based on markets and 6 months from now you cantfigure out if it will be good or bad.  Its a great learning experience though either way.  Good luck

Is there a low cost GPU (less than $400),

Price < $400

NVIDIA
1. 1050
2. 1060 6GB

Mining in ZEC coin or can be 1060 mining in ETH coin.

AMD
1. RX570 8 GB
2. RX560
mining in ETH coin (excellent).

Software
for ETH one of is Claymore :
check this thread

Pools
for ETH one of which ethermine.org

that can make enough to pay for itself in a year?
Depends on the price of a coin

I might stretch a bit and get a 1070ti. It threads the needle between the power of a 1080ti and lower price cards--once upon a time it was 450-470 but I would wait a bit and bet you can find a second hand one for 500. Now, they were only released mid-late last year, so a second hand wouldn't have been run for years. Or wait and check Newegg daily deals and email deals each morning, you just want one so you might find something new on sale upper 500's within the next couple months. Other reasons:

8GB so it will handle ethereum DAG increase if you go that route
GDDR5 memory so you could tackle eth without the 5X problems on a 1080+
These things rock equihash--I can get a legitmate 530 sols/s at 4+ sols/watt with bminer
power usage is reasonable, I get the above on 120-130 watts, they have varying maximums but not super high

Anyway something to consider--bit more than 400 bucks, but these are half my farm and I wish they were 100%.

Nvidia 1050ti is probably the best dollars/hash rate right now. That doesn't take into account efficiency...it will be a little $ per MH to operate. GPU are overpriced right now and I think as manufactures catch up to demand I expect prices to drop quite a bit by mid-summer.
