… and get your money stolen or get LE easy access? Come on, the bitcoin idea is be your own bank. No third party risk should be acceptable for the more security aware people.

Indeed.

Bitcoin is decentralized... the antithesis of bitcoin is really centralized websites and authorities.

An issue which most people probably fail to consider is that there is a vast difference in the needs that the different participants in the ecosystem have.

For many of us, the cost of a bag of Doritos and some pot represent a fair fraction of our net worth.  (Ya, been there, done that.)

Others need a safe place to store blocks of value in the above $100k range.  A small fraction of our net worth can keep us going for years and a theft of it (say, from something like the Instawallet failure) would be infuriating but would impact our financial statement only in a negligible way.

For my part I consider Bitcoin to be a superior solution to such things as bank deposits and IRAs for protection against certain types of risk.  Currently at least.  Critically, I also consider a financial service provider to have the same sort of protections that I have by utilizing Bitcoin as a store of value in their operation, so even if I am not in full control or the certain fraction of my net worth that I may have on deposit with an off-chain provider, I am still enjoying some of the benefits that Bitcoin offers even for that...or would be if Bitcoin retains it's broadly distributed peer-2-peer nature at it's core infrastructure level.

It may sound dickish, but I don't see low net worth people as really needing an extreme heavy weight and solid financial solution (like high precision per-purchase representation in a globally distributed and mission critical ledger) very badly.  Sure, it would be great, but if it kills the more critical aspects of the solution via growth which forces the infrastructure into the waiting arms of the big players, it is something which can be and should be sacrificed.

Plenty here in the community believe that the path forward involves it supporting exclusively a flourishing exchange economy and are ambivalent, and often hostile, to the idea of Bitcoin as a store of wealth.  I would hope that the minority who take an active role in the actual engineering of the solution are a bit less absolutist and a bit more pragmatic than the more rabidly philosophical participants (cough..Jeff of BitPay...cough.)

yet another ridiculously long-winded, smug and condescending post from bitcointalk user tvbcof.

Not a one.  It's very sad.

Tell me, did you're comment add anything of value to the thread which is, for better or worse, sticky'd?  For my part, I thought in earnest about whether it was really valid to comment on a thread which was treated with an extra level of importance.  Eventually I did create a post because the content was relevant to evolution of the system and to those who might be deciding whether to support the system with a full node or not.  And because it was a response to a person who contributes something of value regularly and who seemed to me to be going down the wrong road of absolutism which, I feel, can negatively impact the solution.

I am afraid tvbcof suffers from a serious case of paranoïa but is not taking his pills regularly.
He is calling me a thief ever since the instawallet close down even though he got his full refund.
He probably thinks I am going to reverse the transaction someday by teaming up with some evil, superior forces.
Unfortunately, he is not the only forum member with this condition (I am paging the other full time residents of the ward now).

I never called you a thief, and believe it is probably not the case in fact.

What I did say is that it is a perfectly viable hypothesis that the funds you obtained from ~jav and which subsequently disappeared ended up in your pocket, and further, that it may not have been a complete accident.  This is a far cry from calling it a fact.  My main complaint is that you showed no interest in taking any actions which would positively invalidate this hypothesis.  Whether it is because it is impossible to invalidate something which is true, or simply because you are to incompetent to see the utility of doing so, will probably never be known.

One thing is for sure, though, is that you are highly immature in your behavior.  A post such as the one quoted above demonstrates this conclusively.  It's amusing that you try to pass yourself off as some sort of a responsible businessman then produce material like the above.  Amusing and pathetic.  Also a bit hurtful considering how it derailed this thread without adding anything anything of value.

Anyway, good luck with your continued business efforts or scam efforts...whichever they may be.  The unclaimed Instawallet funds should give you a good jump-start on it whatever the case.

I was going to

  1. thank the moderator for cleaving this thread, and

  2. suggest a correction to the probable oversight of keeping a sticky tag,

but...

In actual fact, certain of the more prescient participants could notice the utility of the sticky, and this thread could become a rather delightfully random and free-form thing.  The ~lethn post above is a wonderful example.  Most likely though it will devolve into an advertising platform for pumping gambling sites and such.

@lethn:  I think that a good many 'racially insensitive' comments are actually a way for the creator to mock the absurdities of racism and are wildly amusing as such.  It's to bad that only a minority of people have the ability to appreciate such humor.
