Any advice on how I can earn merit?

Dear all,

I know, this is yet another thread about merit, but I’ve been really asking myself if I am doing anything wrong, which is why I had to write this post.

I’ve been quite active on this forum for some time and have struggled to rank up since the new merit system was introduced.

When merit was introduced, I read many threads in which people said that the system would be beneficial for those who would write quality threads and display a decent command of English. I would argue that my posts generally meet these criteria. Of course I sometimes also write short posts (like everyone else on here), but I have also created some quality and helpful content, which sometimes took me up to an hour to write and research. The result is zero to hardly any merit. I sometimes have the feeling that there is simply too much content on this forum in order to get noticed by people who would be able to give you merit or people who could give you merit simply can’t appreciate the content due to their own lack of language skills. While quality seems to remain unnoticed, there are tons of shitposts that receive merit for reasons that are beyond my imagination.

I was therefore wondering if I am doing anything wrong. Is there anything else I can do beyond putting time in my threads and trying to use correct language to get merit?

I would appreciate if you had any advice for me.

Yep sorry to say but you have been doing it all wrong. You need to start sucking up to people and you will receive merit in no time. That's how this forum works.

It is unhealthy for people to get desperate for merit, because then you start forcing yourself to post the strangest things that are not helpful. You should stop worrying about merit and focus on becoming more informed, helpful, creative and useful. Merits should be of literally no concern to you.

You say that you've been quite active for a long time, but you barely have any posts and just registered 2-months ago. You have not been active for a long time and you barely post anything. If you think 2-months is being around for a long-time, then you are sorely mistaken about the expectations around here.

This is true, it is going to take time to become knowledgeable and have something to say that stands out. From a quick look at your post history, you are entirely focused on altcoins. This being the Bitcoin Forum may also be a bit of a handicap to you.

We’ll that’s the kind of answers you’d expect from someone who is in the comfortable position to sit on a nice stash of merit. From your perspective it is easy to say that someone shouldn’t worry about merit.
I also grant you that I haven’t been around here for a long time, but definitely not that I haven’t been active. That’s definitely not the kind of “advice” I had hoped for....

There are many reports of people who receive merits for a one line post of maybe 3 words and they are not punished.
I think that the wise-guys are still doing their thing while we are taking the punishment.

I think you are spending too much time in the alt and bounty sections. Also, I found economics a bit spammy, so I don't go there very often.

Another minor point is your representation of numbers. The dot is used in mathematics to represent a decimal point, and a comma is used to group larger numbers into threes. This means that 1,000 represents one thousand and not just one. For some reason EU countries seem to reverse this, and it is one reason that an EU country can never replace London as a major international financial centre.

You can earn merits by just simply posting constructive and useful posts. Enjoy on posting don't understand if you're post will be merited it will merited if your post deserves it.

I think our active role will also affect the development of merit. we should be able to do a report and we can do that easily. believe that mod can do everything well. they will filter and ultimately take action against the account that is doing the farming. for me justice and also the lack of spammers should be the ultimate goal and we will feel the existence of a much more comfortable forum and also much better.

Yes, I come from an EU country and we “reverse” points and commas, but I don’t think that this has anything to do with merit. However, I will try to use the US standard in the future since this is an international forum.

After this merit system is implemented I was so upset because I know that it will be too hard to rank up in our generation here but time passed by I came of a thinking that "being upset wont help me" so I decided to move on and dont think about getting merits anymore but still contributing good things in the community such as making my post good quality (or at least average), helping other newbies, sharing some useful info's and helping to report those spammers without expecting merits in return.

This is the keys for me to get merits:

-This is the most important for me dont overthink about getting merits, overthinking will just cause stress and you cannot think properly (waste time and lessen your chance of getting merit).

-Be more active, means check all the current activities in the forum there are events in this forum that gives merits by doing a task. I get some merits to those events.

-Continue your good contribution to the community without expecting merit, just think like this (if my post dont get merits its ok but if someone appreciate my post and give merits its better).

-More post, the higher chance of getting merits, this doesnt mean that post count really helps.
This means the more people you help, the more you contribute good things in the community and the more useful information you post, the more users can notice and appreciate you and it has a higher chance of getting merits.

It isn't Brexit hate - it's EU hate - it has destroyed so many countries, and I'm glad to see that it mow appears to have a limited life.

I mentioned the dot and comma issue because, although it is an extremely minor issue, it can slow down a quick scan of a post. I read a lot of posts, partly out of interest, and partly because I want to support this forum via the merit system. Anything that stops my scan to determine the meaning is an annoyance, it can also lead to misunderstandings. I think I saw a post where somebody had sent 1,000 of something when they meant to sent 1.

I understand your frustration, but, to be honest, I've read your posts and all are into the altcoin section. As some users have told you, this is going to be difficult for you to earn merits in just one section. I recommend for you to read other sections and cooperate in different kinds of boards here, like press, legal, bitcoin discussion... You can also share your knowledge with newbies on the "Beginners & help" board or in "Technical discussion", where there are many asking for help.
You will need to be more involved here in order to be seen, be read and to earn some merits. I will be honest with you: I've read some of your topics with the initial intention of giving you some merit and I've found nothing remarkable enough, so I've given you anything for the moment.
Besides, begging for merit on the meta section is never the best way of getting them. Just be patient and do not obsess about merit, for it is the worst way you can take. If you just relax and become participative on more sections here, as well as you enjoy writing, reading, learning and sharing, you will increase your merits, for sure, because you write well.
But do not come back here to ask for merits. This is a very big place and it is difficult, sometimes, to be seen. Be patient!

Don't quote post in full, especially if they are adjacent. I've got jochico on ignore, so I don't really want to see his posts, but that isn't the main reason. Quoting a long post like that bulks up the thread, and you run the risk of merit awarders just skipping over your reply, so you won't get any merit no matter how good it is.

The most important thing to gain merit is to get your post read, and that isn't the same as having it seen. Once you have got a merit awarder reading your post, then you need quality and legibility to keep him reading it.

Actually if you want to earn the merits. Sender must be in the mood to share the merit first, else your quality post also will not get any merits dude. I some posts with the 1 line and few words contains also grab the merits easily.
Information must short and perfect that kind posts will allow you earn the merit. As well as that you need to choose the section where the merit givers will be roaming around. So technical support and meta are suggestion to make the informative cum statistical data thread.

I have looked though your posts and they look good, it's just going to be a matter of time until you rank up.

The alt boards are very low in merit sources, I should know, I'm also mainly posting there...  So, merit will be harder to get there. Too bad people are not realising the land of new opportunities has moved to alts and not BTC.

Another suggestion would be to also post in review threads, this way you will increase your post visibility. You will find these threads in the Bitcoin/Marketplace/Services section of this forum.

It is not a matter of 3 words. It is a matter of the content whether it was useful or not. You can answer a thread using only a sentence or even less. You do not need to type a long paragraph to answer a thread when it can be answered with only one sentence. Socrates said "All I know is that I know nothing." That statement is surely full of words and thoughts. So, get to the point and be informative.
