Beyond the obvious I suggest avoiding coins with large market caps that were instamined.
Stick to these:

Bitcoin
Litecoin
Feathercoin

New or less popular coins to consider include:

SIC (simple inflation coin)
O Coin (open source coin)
Blake Coin
and... my coin Cinnamon Coin

Best wishes for success with your project.

Check out my coin Photon
Merge Mine 5 other Blake 256 coins - 6x your hash power  https://www.blakecoin.org/

The obvious choice is not always the best choice.

I'd like to suggest 'SecureCoin' otherwise known as SRC.

It's small so far so everyone's an early adopter in SRC and it's only been around for a short while but the good thing about it is it's mint rate - it's the same as the early days of BTC.

The blocks on SRC are targeted to be found once per minute so the block reward is vastly different to Bitcoin but the overall total coins minted are the same each day.

There aren't tens of thousands of these coins being minted every day - it's being minted at a sustainable rate. There are enough for people to buy without having the coins created at such a rate that it's unsustainable.

This is one of the few alt coins which hasn't gone down to a tenth of it's former value during the recent Bitcoin value burst to above $200 so it obviously has a lot of support despite being a relative newcomer.

It's also a CPU coin which uses multiple algorithms to sign the transactions - this is a plus.

SRC is traded on Cryptsy and will also be listed along with DGC on the upcoming CryptoAve exchange.

When chosing a coin to buy and hold I believe the mint rate is very important which is what draws me to SRC - it has a proven model based on the Bitcoin mint rate.

+1 for SRC.  Couldn't have said it better myself.  Samson, you should put your TAG ID in your signature so I can send you some TAGcoin.  Smiley

Megacoin would be nice.

On the note of the rewards system; do you think developing a public mod for forums would be possible?
I think the prospect of a MyBB board mod that awards users small amount of Crypto-currency for posts would be great.   Smiley

If you're already adding digitalcoin, securecoin would be a good bet as well. Both coins were released very cleanly without any kind of instamine or premine, unlike PPC, NVC, FTC (lots of altcoins, really..) which makes its economy quite healthy, not dominated by massive bagholders like you'll find on btc-e. Not to mention the developer of both coins is working hard on his own services, namely a fiat exchange that'll tie DGC to $USD that's nearing completion; if you've got similar plans then there's already room established for collaboration. Of all the altcoins in existence the community behind DGC is certainly the most attractive.

Market cap really only refers to how long the coins have been around. Since they got in early they soaked up a lot of the initial revenue, though I'm sure most here will agree that cryptocurrency hasn't even begun to fully mature. I'm certainly interested in your services, this is what we need to get Bitcoin and its ilk mainstream. Best of luck!
